A marvelous stay at the Hartford House Hotel. The wonderful interior has a classic setting with amazing pieces of furniture and art. Their attention to detail is impeccable, great dining experience with the tasting menu and excellent customer service from Nombuso and Nelly was wonderful. The chef prepared tasty vegan and vegetarian dishes throughout the stay. A picturesque setting. A highly recommended place to getaway.
The location and setting is really something. The staff were very friendly and the garden cottage was well appointed. Unfortunately maintenance seemed to be an issue with a faulty air conditioner. The food was very disappointing. The chef failed to respect dietary requirements and was very bland. I am all for relaxed dining but if you eating the four course meal and not the six courses I dont believe that you should sit and wait while the rest of the dining room east their additional two courses.
Absolutely outstanding in all aspects - the newly revamped interior is out of this world! Stylish, elegant & cosy. Pre drinks in the beautiful bar is a must. The first night we had a 6 course dinner on the verandah. I was disappointed as it was a bit chilly and I was looking forward to a dinner in the cosy restaurant. The verandah/conservatory is more suited for breakfasts I would say. Dinner was lovely and standard of the food excellent. Second night we were seated inside the restaurant which was só much more enjoyable. Enjoyed the 4 course dinner as well. Overall a most enjoyable experience - tentative, very friendly staff as well!
Amazing food Paul the chef did an amazing job with the food. Positively the best food I have had in kzn ever
We stayed at Hartford House for two nights. What a fantastic experience! The hotel has been recently renovated and as you can see from the photos it is really beautiful. We stayed in a veranda suite and the room and bathroom were huge. The food was really good and the service from all the staff was excellent. Highly recommended!
Stayed in a garden suite - absolutely beautiful room.Front of house staff where really friendly. The place its self is very beautiful and scenic.Only disappointment and where the star was lost was for dinner. The 4 course meal was like a joke. The waiters forget to bring out 2nd course and had to remind 2 separate waiters about it and then on the 3rd course, they did not bring the wine for the pairing until I finesh eat. U cant do a fine dinning experience if ur staff cant match up.Breakfast was very good.
Cosy accommodation. We were lucky that it snowed and was the highlight of our trip. Food is on the gourmet side.
The perfect place for a special occasion. The 3 course lunch meal was a delight and a culinary adventure. We will be back very soon.
Accommodation outstandingBoth 6 course dinner and breakfast amazing. If you need a days break go here
Beautiful! The rooms, grounds, staff were perfect. The dinner was amazing! 100% recommend for a short getaway to the Midlands
We visited the hotel restaurant for lunch. Much of the surrounding rooms and buildings were undergoing refurbishment but the restaurant itself was beautiful. Service was good but the food was a little expensive. We called prior to coming in to confirm if they had vegan options. The person that took the call did not work at the restaurant but confirmed that they can cater to vegans. Confident in her affirmations, we proceeded to embark on this journey to the tree-lined roads of Hartford House. On arrival, we could not immediately locate the restaurant but found it eventually. The waiter who seated us handed us a menu but did not know anything about vegan options. He had to call the head chef who we spoke to and she did say that she could assist us.The vegan meal was really good, mushroom with a sauce and some underdone
Sunday LunchExquisite setting even allowing for current construction and upgrades. We had the set menu.Everything was well prepared and presented. Lacked the wow factor for me. Beef tongue starter and risotto could be singled out as really good. Portions could be a tad more generous and a cup of coffee to round off the meal would have been nice.Service good overall. One unfortunate incident when waitress was on her phone while we made several attempts to attract her attention.
We had lunch here to say goodbye to my dads widow. It was a tough day for us, but the lovely, tranquil garden, the attentive staff, and the excellent food made it a memorable one.Thank you, it was a real treat to spend the day at Hartford House. Would recommend it to anyone.
Had breakfast there. R185pp. Really good food on a beautiful property. Definitely worth a stop if you in the area. Make bookings though
Beautifully restored... great food. A must to visit..
Really awesome accommodation, nicely renovated room , comfortable bed in a truly beautiful part of the world
We,my wife & our son & daughter spent a lovely evening and had dinner, breakfast and found all to be superb.
Absolutely wonderful! Pippa was so friendly and attentative to all our needs. Had an amazingly delicious high tea. Lovely to see this old gem rising up in glory once again. Well done to all involved.
Beautiful with great service and food
The food was exceptional.
Wonderful service from stuff and manager. Beautiful gardens, beautiful unit and the food was delicious.
Absolutely an epic experience the vibe is killer and our ghost pinky mchune when above and beyond to make us feel welcome especially taking the time to make sure our kids were at easy during the fine dining experience pinky was amazing the chefs did a amazing job on the tasted menus and went out of they way to make sure our dietary requirements were met I advise everyone to go for this experience this place was full of history and a absolute pleasure been here
Such a beautiful place. Lovely staff, beautiful horses, hotel and rooms immaculate. Food was heavenly. Only negative: I asked for GM, was directed to her office only to see and hear her screaming abuse at a very scared and shaken looking staff member. Unacceptable behaviour from management in any industry. Ruined my entire day so cannot keep quiet.
Gone are the days of fantastic food and impeccable service. The food is disappointing on any level and devastating compared with what it use to be. Everything about Hartford leaves you feeling its not worth the money spent. Rather sad considering how naturally beautiful it is there. I had blood stains on the bed sheets, and no doors to the bathroom although the hinges are there, which is quite awkward when the loo is not separated. And when you gave feedback there was little interest. Unfortunately after years of visiting Hartford I will no longer be going.
Loved the accommodation, facilities etc however let down by the food which wasnt as delicious as expected - not bad, just not excellent.
The Hartford house is a 5star Destination in the Midlands. It recently underwent a complete renovation and is tastefully decorated to the highest standards. From Bedlinnen to Towels and Interior design that place is perfect for me . We booked for one night and ended up staying 3. Food is fine cuisine ,service impeccable . The peaceful tranquil surrounding adds to your relaxation . It’s a working Farm with Summerhill Studfarm Connected to it . If you love Horses ,then this is heaven. Pool is big invites you to relax. Garden is beautifully landscaped . Rent a bike and cycle along never ending paddocks .All in all there was not one point which we had to complain about .
Beautiful setting!, A hidden gem wrapped in splendor.
My wife and I visit the KZN Midlands often and have stayed at various establishments over the last several years. The one name that came highly recommended was Hartford House. So we finally made a booking but due to the COVID-19 Lockdown, we kept having to move the booking for another date. Almost a year later we were finally able to go on our trip. Pros: the KZN Midlands is a beautiful place, country chic with excellent views of nature. The main hotel and reception area are beautiful with great staff who are always ready to assist. The bath in our suite was gigantic and luxurious. The scones at breakfast are delicious. The horses are stunning. Cons: We were put up in a Lakeside suite which is round room with a tatch roof. Initial opinion was Wow! But looks proved deceiving - the rafters in the patio were covered in spiderwebs with spiders dangling just above ones head. The basins in the bathroom had taps which were made for aesthetics and not function and the shower drain seemed to block up causing the shower floor to pool. The mini bar was tilted and the TV was crowded with bits and bobs. On our second night there we experienced a short burst of heavy rains which resulted in the roof leaking and wetting the bed. . Due to operating at capacity we were give fresh bed covers, a weather update and a bottle of bubbley. This suite is in dire need of attention. The expectation was accommodation and service at a level close to perfection especially when considering the price tag attached. In short our experience of Hartford House does not live up to the hype.
Stunning place, very hospitable staff...breathtaking scenery 😍 a great getaway!
Excellent place!!
Amazing place hidden in the midlands
An absolute treat!!
Chef Matthew has a very promising career. Watch out!The tasting menu was well thought out and filled with a multitude of flavors and textures. Great experience
One of the best farm to table and locally sourced fine dining. Its deep in the KZN midlands but a real treat. The food was fantastic.
Amazing experience. The food is amazing be sure to do the wine pairing with the six course meal. Well run and friendly management that accommodate your every request.I will be back
A farewell for 4 people. Went with high expectations for a super high tea unfortunately small portions for 4 people inadequate. Cheese board and cold meats board virtually non existent. Bread for gluten intolerant made with desiccated coconut incredibly sweet not the best. Pity as we expected more. Beautiful setting and wonderful company made up for the disappointment.
I cant explain the beauty of this place its like out of a movie.. The receptionist Dominique and the staff are top class. Thank you for making our visit an unforgettable one.
This is the ultimate place to go and switch off completely from city life in such beauty. Our room was a lakeside room and had both a gorgeous view and was awesome on the inside. It is extremely romantic and beautiful but we also managed to take our 11 month old baby who had a terrific time with the horses. We chose the 4 course meals (not the 6 courses!) for the three nights we were there and the food was world class. I also enjoyed a Swedish massage and reflexology treatment in the spa. Would highly recommend this place to switch off and rejuvenate.
Lovely setting. Went for tea. Staff not very helpful and one hardly saw them. Sandwiches were very tasrt but the afternoon tea does not even come close to Oyster Box. Besides sandwich on the platter no other savoury option was given. All just a little too sweet. On the website it said it included a glass of bubbly...which it did not.
If only words could put into perspective how truly stunning this place is. Its an amazing escape from the bustling city scapes to a more peaceful and tranquil homeland. Hartford House is a gem to be found for anyone visiting the Southern part of Africa. I cant stress enough how much I love this place, I hope youd all find it as amazing as I did too.
We really enjoyed the visit on this serene, clean, well kept and stylishly furnished establishment. If you are looking to getaway from the hustle and bustle - this place is ideal. Youll experience a spider or two because of the country setup but that didnt negatively affect our stay. Excellent service from all staff and the food is AMAZING.
Amazing piece of heritage, and the food was out of this world. One of the most incredible wedding venues that Ive attended. Understated opulence in the gorgeous decor. The gardens are a nod to the Babylonstoren wedding venue in Cape Town, with bearing fruit trees throughout the garden.
Hartford House is an experience one should indulge in. The accommodation is top class and the dining a true marvel with great wine pairing. Chef Chris is a creative genius! Kudos to the whole Hartford House team!!!
Beautiful grounds, friendly staff. Dining at the main restaurant is extraordinary!
Beautiful wedding venue with awe inspiring gardens and views. Terribly friendly staff. They make you feel like youre the centre of attention.Absolutely gorgeous cottages packed with attention to detail.
We went there for our first anniversary and what a special occasion it was at Hartford House. There is such attention to detail that not a lot of other establishments have. The hosts were friendly and attentive. The rooms are well decorated. The views are amazing. The food is divine and worth every penny. Thank you to our hosts for making a special occasion that much more special. We will definitely be back.
Beautiful establishment in the countryside which is approximately 150 years old. Well maintained gardens and hotel. Friendly staff and amazing 3 course meals which change daily. The element of surprise is key with their delicious meals. Most of ingredients are grown on site. The presentation is always a delight and the taste wont disappoint. One can spend hours in the gorgeous gardens of this peaceful place. I would love to stay on my next visit. My mum really enjoyed her birthday surprise treat here.
Visited this place with my fiance. Location was great. Service was ok. Food really sucked. Very tired of eating bland food and people calling it fine dining
This is an absolutely magical place. It is like a picture out of a story book. There really are no words to explain how beautiful this place is. It oozes class and old school charm. The trees, the plants, the flowers and the gorgeous buildings are all simply breathtaking. The service is excellent and this was truely a visit I shall never forget. Thank you to Danielle and the rest of the staff for making my special day so memorable. Truely unforgettable.
Truly one of the best hidden gems in the Midlands just outside Mooiriver. Peace and quiet. Surrounded with endless hills, valleys and stunning views. Horse riding, fishing, tennis, cycling, swimming, hiking and so much more to do. Really an amazing place and every penny spent well.
Superb cuisine, beautiful gardens. What a lovely place🐎
Had a lovely lunch at the tea shop today. So pretty, friendly and helpful staff. Surroundings beautiful, gardens and Summerfields stud and jockey training just beautiful.
It was a special family celebration shared with close friends and it could not have taken place in a more outstanding environment; Hartford House is a very special Place. Food was wonderful, service and attention impeccable. First visit, but not the last.An aside note for Google Maps. Your directions were lousy - we got so lost that we arrived 45 min after our guests. Work on that one.
It is a little jewel tucked into the Midlands. The Natural beauty and the mixture of the building are stunning. The service along with tea garden has excellent coffee.
Lovely Wedding Weekend away. Beautiful place with lovely suites. Service was good and the food tastey, although the portion sizes could be bigger.
A wonderful experience. Excellent service and food. Very well kept grounds
Food was delicious. Staff was very friendly. A very peaceful and beautiful place
The staff and ambience is awesome. The food is just fantastic
Amazing atmosphere and great food. Friendly staff and what an awesome scenery.
Always a pleasure to visit Hartford House. So elegant and interesting. Cant think of a nicer place to go for a meeting!
Classy. The place to be seen for sunday lunch
Outstanding tranquillity incredible gardens excellent service a place to regroup and a must to visit
Great experience staying at the lake house in the Hartford estate. Rooms are big and luxurious, only gripe being that theres quite a bit of dust, not allergy friendly. But thats a small issue. Overall the experience well exceeded my expectation. Staff are friendly and always willing to assist. Some minor suggestions to them, if theyre listening, 1) whilst the tasting menu is of exceptional quality, it is seriously lacking in quantity. Nothing worse than starving yourself for that dinner, to leave unsatisfied. 2) would be nice if there was an option to have your car washed after being parked amongst the trees and many incontinent birds. That is offered at other Midland retreats and really appreciated.
Beautiful and relaxing place to visit. Amazing gardens, horses, forest and food. Stunning!
Beautiful hotel. Very big. Could be a good venue for a function/wedding.
Beautifully presented food, that tastes amazing. Tranquil atmosphere, picturesque surroundings
Worth every cent ....food, wine, fresh air and beautiful walks
Beautiful gardens and very, very quiet. The best high tea Ive had in South Africa.
The grounds and public areas of the hotel are excellent but sadly let down by the condition of the rooms. No air conditioning or proper shower (just a shower head in the bath). More importantly (and which could be fixed in a few minutes), the outside door to the room doesnt lock and is secured by one loose screw trying to hold a bolt in place.
Most amazing setting with a daily changing menu. Lunch was delicious. Great wine selection.
Wonderful accommodation., fantastic staff and help and to cap it all gourmet food , including my diabetic requirements
Ok A magnificent place to visit. Experience a world class animal farm of its own.
Good, but food coulg have been bigger portions
Such a beautiful place, amazing food, gorgeous views - a fantastic experience!
What a beautiful place to visit. The most spectacular food, flawless service and beautiful surroundings. Highly recommemded.
Hotel decor needs refreshing and updating. Staff friendly and food good.
Stunning farm stay over.definately worth a visit.
Excellent management and staff. Will definitely be back. Certainly a home for Kings and Presidents.
Once again a totally special visit with an amazing dinner. This place continues to offer a high quality experience.
Has been my favourite upmarket destination for over 10 years now!
Excellent venue, food and service
Beautiful with delicious food and service.
Beautiful scenery. Very friendly and accommodating staff. Amazing place to stay
Always a special place to go to - perfection and beauty in every corner.
Dream wedding venue. Thoughtful and professional staff. Wonderful food. Recommended without reserve.
Played at the most amazing wedding, this venue is like something out if a British novel
By far one of the best culinary experiences of my life. The attention to detail is incredible. We had lunch sitting which is not normally paired with wines but all we had to do was ask Constantijn our chef to call the in house sommelier to suggest a suitable wine for each course. The menu changes on a daily basis which is fantastic if you are up for something different. Many of the ingredients are grown on the property and surrounds so it is truly a taste of Africa. I highly recommend this as a meal of experiences and I will be returning soon!
- Very friendly staff- Good food- nice rooms- old flair
Beautiful place especially by the lake houses and the food is exceptional
Stunning surroundings . Stay was enjoyed
Wonderful place, superb staff and exquisite food, highly recommended.
Lovely place, excellent service and genius food.
