On Wednesday, September 4, I was on my way from Durban to Kimberley to celebrate the 50th anniversary of my matric year at CBC Kimberley and I made my first stop at Golden Gate in the eastern Free State.After a brief break my normally ultra-reliable Honda CRV 2013 model with 52 000km on the clock failed to start - the engine was swinging over but that was it.I phoned my insurer Santam and they arranged a flatbed truck to take my car to the nearest dealership in Ladysmith the next morning. After overnighting at the Golden Gate Hotel I was back at the car at 9:30 and the flatbed took me and the Honda all the way back to Ladysmith.It was about 1pm by the time we got there and obviously all technicians were busy but the foreman told me as soon as one was available they would investigate my problem.About 2pm the technician diagnosed that the fuel pump was out of action and we would have to order a new one from Joburg.The man in spares then explained to me how Honda parts were ordered and delivered in South Africa and that if we were lucky the pump would be sent with the courier overnight to Durban and then back to Ladysmith. At this stage it was becoming obvious that I was going to miss my reunion which, at my stage of life (68), I felt was rather important.The dealer principal, Craig Ross, walked past at this stage and overheard the conversation. He introduced himself and said he would do his best to speed things up as much as possible and immediately starting phoning whoever he could in Joburg. After a frantic hour or so he assured me that the pump would be delivered before noon the next day.He then asked me where I would be staying and I said the nearest hotel but he insisted that the Ladysmith Motel was the best accommodation in the town and personally drove me there, made sure I was sorted out and even bought me a few beers. He had also arranged for the technician to come to work earlier on the Friday so he could strip the car and install the new pump as soon as it was available and send me on my way.The next morning when I phoned him he said his driver would be there in a few minutes and the technician had already bolted the pump in place and they were waiting for me to take a test ride.Shortly thereafter I was on my way and made it in plenty of time to Kimberley for the reunion which would have been impossible without Craigs efforts.Yours sincerely,Trevor BrucePS The spares manager in Ladysmith told me the part had been superceeded and would cost R5 900 instead of, I think, R5 200. I know my car is out of the guarantee period but feel that a fuel pump should surely last longer that 52 000km? My car has been serviced religiously every year and Im hoping it will continue to do so until the end of my driving life, given the reputation Honda have established as very reliable cars.
