A long drive, but worth it. The significance and what the cave offers makes it worth it.Oldest proof that man used controlled fire.Make sure you check opening hours before going. Pack a picnic basket as there is no food.“The ability to control fire was a crucial turning point in human evolution, but the question when hominins first developed this ability still remains. Here we show that micromorphological and Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy (mFTIR) analyses of intact sediments at the site of Wonderwerk Cave, Northern Cape province, South Africa, provide unambiguous evidence—in the form of burned bone and ashed plant remains—that burning took place in the cave during the early Acheulean occupation, approximately 1.0 Ma. To the best of our knowledge, this is the earliest secure evidence for burning in an archaeological context.”
What an important place! Humanitys oldest known home. Sadly in need of funding to build proper facilities to help celebrate its place in history.
Its was very educational. Well worth itI only wish that they open during peak times. So that more people could gain the knowledge of our heritage
The caves itself are wonderful and have beautiful bushmen rock art paintings, but you first have to get past the most rude, disrespectful and arrogant guide, its a wonderwerk that he has not been fired yet. Arrived at advertised times, was told to go away as he is not opening. Decided to wait by locked gate and after 30 minutes he eventually let us in, could only see the cave portion, he did not want to give a guided tour, could not visit the display section as he kept it locked as he did not have time for us.
Please fix hours on your website.
What a waste of my time and petrol. We got there and we couldnt get in because the guy who was supposed to show us around was not there. Their phone does not work so there is no way of checking if they are open or not. Never again. If you still decide to visit them just bring cash! They dont swipe. 😩
Interesting. Upkeep of reserve could be much better.
It was cool. There are better caves, but for where it is and the history/geology/boredom, its well functional.
Very dissapointed. Called yesterday and confirmed that the Wonderwerk caves will be open today. They confirmed that it will be open till 15:30 today. Arrived just before 14:00 and waited until about 15:00. It is the second time we go there and it is closed when it is supposed to be open.Lack of funding cant be blamed on terrible management of the place. It is supposed to operate during operating hours. Especially when they confirm that it will be open.We drove very far to visit the caves. We were not the only family who went all the way in vain.Someone needs to look into why the operating times of the Wonderwerk Caves are so unreliable. We are all interested in this amazing historical site, but just dont seem to find it open when we go to great lengths to get there.
Fascinating place to visit, site of hundreds of thousands of years of continued human occupation. Dont be deterred by the empty sentry gate house - just drive in and youll find someone who will give you a tour of the cave. Also a little info museum to fill in the gaps and provide additional information
Totally underwhelming. Graffiti over cave paintings. Attendant asleep so we went in without his knowledge. Woke him up when we wanted to leave in order to pay. Drunk attendant tried to pretend he had no change for R200 but produced change when we refused to hand over R200 for R100 entrance fee. Not worth the 80km detour.
Dont bother going. They are always closed. We even phoned to confirm they were open before we left. Waited for an hour hoping they would return. This is the second time nobody is available.
An amazing place to visit. A very long history, and a beautiful setting
Excellent
Magnificent view and the guide was really good! Toilets bad tho😏
A hidden gem well worth a visit
Had a great time at Wonderwerk Cave in Kuruman July 2018 with the team of researchers from Canada. The cave has amazing rock engravings which makes it a great archaeological site. Thanks to the staff
Arrived at the Caves on Monday, 23 Sept with family only to find everything locked.Called numerous numbers, no answer.Eventually got hold of the manager who informed us that they decided to close on the Monday and rather open from the Tuesday. We did inform her that the right thing to do was to update the website and put a sign on the gate. Many other tourists left disappointed and frustrated to have driven so far for nothing.
The website and sign on the gate said it would be open Monday to Sunday 9am to 5pm. We arrived on Friday at 2.45pm and it was apparently closed for the weekend.
Nice historical place
It was just okay but the excavations takes away the beauty of the caves
Poorly managed and the tour guide was inaudible.
Very interesting cave
15:20 glosed gate...no staff available to assist
Very interesting
What a cave!
Not open over weekends
It seemed dead
Beautiful
Well
