There is such a hype about this place and sadly very over rated. As you enter, the building, decor and setting is really stunning. The service is friendly, helpful but slow. The food unfortunately was a huge let down. My Jamaican chicken salad was so underwhelming. The bulgar wheat is dry and the sauces do not adequately bring it together. Two of the tiniest and extremely dry pieces of chicken garnished the salad. Sticky chicken wings was drenched in a sickeningly sweet basting. Chicken ssndwich..meh..And really peeps what is the rave about the carrot cake? It really was average - nice but average. You guys certainly havent tried the one at the Arabella.

Awesome place! Attended a wedding at The Barn Owl recently and we had a blast. Ryan (the owner) is an impressive dude! Especially in the manner that he connects and communicates with his staff!Ps. The coffee is also hands-down the best in the Midlands (next morning when we returned to the scene of the crime 😊)

Sadly, I was so hungry I was half-way through the DELICIOUS jerked chicken thigh salad before I remembered to take a pic... The last time I ate tzatziki that sublime I was on a Greek island at a taverna with my feet in the beach sand. Go to The Barn Owl. Feast on the views while your children play. Feast on the food. Relax. Be glad youre in the Midlands.

Situated in the middle of Curry Post Hill is the little gem called The Barn Owl, very popular and busy place indeed. Booking over weekends recommended. Great coffee and delicious dessert. They do serve breakfast and a variety of other meals. You can even go for a walk, hike or cycle while you spending the day out. Stunning views and a great way to spend those Sunday day times.

So I dont usually post reviews but this was a terrible dining experience. My wife, daughter and I arrived for lunch and were seated on the couch to wait for a table. The venue itself is beautiful but Im afraid that is where it ends. After a wait someone eventually came to take a drinks order and we ordered food as well as we were quite hungry, not having had breakfast. The food and drinks arrived together and we were not offered a table despite there being a few tables free by this point and I had to ask to please be seated at a table which was then organized. The food portions were small. My wife ordered a R110 double cheese smash burger which was about the size of the mini burgers at McDonalds. The bun was toasted and nice enough but the burger patties were dry and overcooked.I had the toasted Cajun chicken mayo for R78 which was alright with regards to taste however the chicken was terribly over cooked and tough and stringy. In addition there was not much filling. My daughter had the toasted cheese for R70 and there was almost no cheese on one side of the sandwich, you could see the bread on both sides of the bread when you opened the sandwich. If there was one thing I thought they could not get wrong its a toasted cheese. Feels like we payed R70 for toasted bread. All meals came with chips that were very average. With drinks my wife had a cappuccino that was decent enough. My daughter ordered the Chai which was unpalatable and took a couple sips and abandoned it. I had an earl Grey tea which was served in a nice fancy tea pot but the pot itself did not allow the tea to brew well so I had to take out the tea bag and place it into my cup to allow it to brew.Overall. Service 1/5Food 1/5Value 1/5Ambience 4/5I would never recommend anyone ever visit this establishment and further if someone asked me to meet them there, I would kindly request that they choose an alternate venue.

Serendipity at its finest. Our road trip was well underway and we had been doing very well with sticking to our plans, until of course, the breakfast spot we were heading to was closed.Luckily, not too long before that, we saw a humble sign pointing towards The Barn Owl. One U-turn and a few minutes later, we were at one of our all-time favourite cafés.All the essentials are present; friendly staff, a delicious menu, amazing coffee and a picturesque setting. The only thing we would change is moving it closer to home (Joburg)!

Spent the day at The barn Owl 🦉for a private function today. Was a memorable day on account of the owner/manager. He was attentive and engaging in the most unexpected ways. It felt like we were at a friends home. As the day turned nippy he built us a fire around the seated fire pit🔥. Also, provided us with beautiful crochet blankets. We walked and talked about his garden/plants and he was kind enough to give me some shoots🌱 to bring back to Ballito. My dad was sick in the late afternoon and he took charge of my dads care, whilst reassuring us that everything was fine❤. Would definitely like to visit again for this kind of hospitality 👌

Staff were so welcoming and made sure we were happy even on a busy Easter Saturday. The hot chocolate was perfect in the chilly weather and was soon followed by the food. Toasted sandwiches were delicious - rustic look with gourmet flavour! The views are beautiful and the restuarant itself is stunning - beautiful architecture and well laid out. Tables both inside and out. A jungle gym for kids. A clean bathroom. A fresh bakes table with cakes and a coffee trailer outside for quick takeaways. They also have a walk down to the dam as well as a longer trail walk/run. Highly recommend a visit when youre in the Midlands. Ill be back on a warmer day to enjoy the views and relaxing atmosphere.

Located behind Ground Cover. Bucolic setting. Good coffee and good food. The Americano provides the best opportunity to experience the flavour profile of this local roast, follow up with a cappuccino to capture the subtle notes better complemented with the smooth steamed milk froth. The cappuccino was indeed very good. The hollandaise sauce on my eggs Benedict was not fluffy smooth emulsified perfection, which was the only disappointment of the experience.Very pleasing interior with ample natural light and tasteful decor.

Beautiful setting and building. Unfortunately we never have a great experience here with food. It’s better to stick to ordering tea/coffee and a cake or sweet treat. We ordered chicken strips for a 4 year old and as we cut into the chicken it was thoroughly raw! Not even partially cooked, but a raw chicken breast inside the batter. Very alarming as this would’ve made our little girl very sick!! The waiters weren’t that bothered or apologetic. They just asked if we’d like something else instead. It put us off our food entirely. The couches we sat on were rather grubby and dog muddy prints on the wall and tons of flies etc.

Nestled in the hills of KwaZulu-Natal, the Barn Owl is a great little stop along the route through the midlands for a coffee and a well deserved vacation pit stop. The location and view from the restaurant are worth taking a moment to appreciate how beautiful this province is. You will quickly find yourself losing your imagination in the wandering hills and trees of the midlands. The interior decor and furniture are both visually easy on the eyes and relatively comfortable. Service is good but nothing worth writing home about. Now the problem. The price related to the quantities you are served, in my humble opinion, are too high for very small. We had a party of 10 and ordered various meals, but unfortunately were all below standard in size and serving proportion. Especially the gnocchi. A bit of a disappointment. Even the great coffee couldn’t save the lack of taste left in our mouths. Easily solved though.

This is a lovely, homey and picturesque little coffee shop / eatery in die midlands Meandre of Pietermaritzburg/Howick area. The restaurant itself boasts a rustic and neat look with a veranda along the north and west side overlooking farmlands. The veranda offers tables both in the sun and shade depending on the time of day.The staff are friendly with good service. The manager is a pleasant man to have a quick chat or a laugh with. If you experience any problem he is speedy to see if it could be amended. The food is top notch both in appearance as well as taste. The prices are affordable with good value for money. If you are a coffee enthusiast - this is a definite place to have a stop over. The Barn owl is situated next to a hand made and locally produced leather store named Ground cover. The Barn Owl has been making some of the best coffee around for ages so its great to see them finally in a permanent venue-and what a stunning venue at that! The building is light and airy and suits the surrounds perfectly. The coffee is still great and the menu while relatively simple provides an interesting take on well known and loved meals. The execution of the food was excellent for such a new restaurant and Im sure theyll just keep improving. Definitely a must stop visit in the Midlands.
