You get greeted by a parking fee...Then you have to walk a distance to the Shak, past what looks like a shabeen, through what remains of the bungalow accommodation. Litter all over the place.Get to the shak, if you are at the bar and not having their prawn dinner youre told, rather impolitely that you have to remain down stairs at the sandy bar in what smells like a urinal.Wont be back.
Food is still amazing, but vibe is not the same. Lawn being mowed while we tried to eat having to avoid flying stones. Staff was great as usual. Please update playlist.
We have been coming to the Prawn Shack for 10 years and have enjoyed the vibe, food and company on many occasions. The sad fact is that it has gone progressively down hill for a couple of years now in terms of service and food portions. We went to see if the change in venue had been accompanied by a change in attitude. Sadly this is not the case. The service was terrible. The food portions could not be described as portions leaving us still unsatisfied and speed of service was indescribably awful. After 5 hours some of my guests left having been served only half of their courses. They delivered 3 tacos to a table of 8 and then expressed surprise we were not happy. Management does not care and I think they cut corners to maximize profit. They had booked more people than they could cope with. We will not return and would not recommend this place.
I love this place. Its open only on a Saturday and Sunday and booking is recommended. It really is a full-day experience as you get 7 courses of food spread over 5 hours 12pm-5pm) with the option to do a beach walk half way through courses. Its a really laid back place with swings at the bars and a lovely setting. Also met the owner who has some interesting tales to tell.
Excellent informal experience, great seafood and a wide range of alcoholic beverages (spirits). Relaxed and chilled ambience with the right crowd. Although the gravel road leading to Prawn Shack (PS) does appear intimidating the restaurant itself is safe and secure. PS is also in close proximity to the nearby estuary and surf for fishing and a quick braai.
Really enjoyed our visit. Rustic atmosphere and food. Very Mozambican beach shack. Too many courses to remember. Ended up dancing on the tables 🙈🙈
Rustic and chilled with delicious food. Dont expect to come for a quick bite! Great way to spend an afternoon.
Seems to be completely shut. All locked up with chains, supposedly it should have been open today but no sign of a restaurant
Nice food. But 4 hours for a 7 course meal can get very tiring. Plan to spend a lot of time here. Lots of space to chill.
An unbeatable and unmissable experience. The restaurant is secluded in the bush near the beach. There are plenty of spots to chill and lounge around in hammocks. Meals are prepared throughout the day. There is even the drink speciality - a live tiny prawn in a shot of tequila. You must book at least a day ahead of time and more if you go in peak season.
Unfortunately the place has gone down terribly. Cleanliness had vanished.Stocks are depleted. Smoking allowed everywhere. Toilets are completely unacceptable. Food is still good but unfortunately all negatives will definitely keep us from returning
Relaxing but great vibe.. Love it
Dont waste your time and money! First 2 courses of food ok. From there on no star at all. Portion sizes not even enough to fill n child.
Was fun and a different experience. Learnt quite a bit about flavour and understanding taste. . . .delicious 7 course , great vibe
It was the most unique restaurant I have visited. The ambiance is rough and rugged and its perfect for the travelling crowd. But once you have stopped there you will never forget it. And you would not want to leave. The beach is very close. And the arrangement of the menu is really spectacular for those who dont have a big appetite. If you go there be prepared. For nothing but a symphony of tastes.
Food is okay, venue is rustic and authentic. Go with good company, an open mind and you will have fun.
Have been wanting to try this place for years and booked for my hubby and I for our anniversary. Traveling from Durban we booked accommodation and hired a baby sitter for our fun experience. we were looking forward to it, only to get a message 2 hours before we are meant to leave to say they are cancelling and not opening for the day due to a function? So angry way to ruin our anniversary plans. So dhocjed! Would really NOT recommend this place as they are obviously highly unreliable and dont really care if you have spent money making plans
This was an experience....unfortunately not a good one. This rustic Shak is rundown and dirty. The quantity as well as quality of the 7 course meal was terrible. My food was cold, one of the six tiny prawns that was served, still had the vein in. The owner was friendly and tried to make amends by giving me a delicious marshmellow, melted over the fire and sprinkled with Tequila, but this wont make me go back ever again.
It is a nice place, but they should tell you before hand that it takes 5-6 hours to get through 7 courses. We were passing by on our way home. The buffet only starts at 12pm!! We just left now without finishing. My friend is 8 months pregnant and was starting to hurt. We were still told to pay FULL PRICE R210 per person even though we didnt finish last 3 courses (the food was not prepared when we left, so no loss for the shack). Absolutely shocking considering you want people coming back. Ladies toilet was horrible - did not flush.
The best place ever so simple but perfect.
We had a lovely lazy afternoon. The food and ambiance was divine and the service great.
A laid back rustic afternoon. Youll either love it or hate it
I understand the rustic shack vibe but perhaps a little attention to the place and service could help alot.
Over-priced, bad service, crazy slow, bad quality food. Never going back again.
Lovely new venue.. very ponta type chilled long lazy lunch vibe
Best value for money. Great place. Great food
Food overpriced, and nothing special! Barman was awesome though!
Difinitive not value for money, very expensive.Atmosphere very relaxed and the service ok
Absolutely amazing & most relaxing spot. Great service!
Ambience - 5/5Suited for Large groups of people who love to booze and chill - 5/5if you looking for a little adventure and wanna try prawn shooters - 4/5Food - 3/5cleanliness - rustic/5
One of the most surreal food experiences, cross between asian curry restaurant and reggae beach bar. Food is outstanding and vibe is exotic and out of the ordinary. The only reason for not getting 5 stars is that ablutions and some aspects of venue tending towards dingey.
Such an amazing experience and will so be visiting the new premises when you move!
Rustic, leizure eating in a tropical backdrop
Enjoyed the food and the homely rustic feel. My kind of getaway place.
It was most disappointing to have went with friends to the Prawn Shack. All the meals put together was not even worth calling it a starter. I was totally disgusted at the way the food was prepared, obviously no one knows about basic hygiene, the food handling and preparation done would call for Health Inspectors to visit this place urgently. R185 for a so called 7 course meal is so misguiding on your website. It calls for management to urgently relook into continuing to invest in this SHACK or please do your selves a favour and shut it down. Presently running it this way will eventually be bad publicity, just by word of mouth. Personally I have discouraged everyone that would like to experience the Prawn Shack.
Nice relaxed atmosphere - friendly service
Not impressed. The lady at the bar did not get my drinks order correct and I had to go back to fetch a beer. When another drink order was taken at our table it did not arrive. After 10 minutes I had to go to the bar myself requesting the beer ordered. There were no wine glasses and I was given a large cooldrink glas for my wine...when I asked for a wine glass the lady at the bar told me they dont have as they were all broken. We ordered the prawn platter which was very bland. Not worth the money. Been there done it but wont be back
Great food, great location and very friendly staff. Please work on the cocktails... They were not good at all...
Enjoyed it
Lovely food, even vegetarian and non seafood options
Lazy lunch is great. Nice way to spend an afternoon with friends. Stunning view of the lagoon.
Great fun fabulous food
A novel idea but service is way nelow standard. The lazy lunch is overprized and actually a rip off. It you want people to sit around for four hours you need to provide comfortable seating and do more than only try to sell booze. The venue is run down and no maintanace are done. Will not go there again.
Totally over priced! Never again. Main meal 6 prawns with no rice chips or salad. After the so called 7 course meal you felt like finding the nearest take away place for food. Very disappointed.
Rustic & relaxed! Great food with a twist
Good food, great view. Be sure to try the cocktails
Great food. Friendly staff and management.
Lovely location. Venue in need of serious revamping, scaffolding collapsing, ceiling beams loose and unattached, loose wooden floor boards, unsafe. Very cool chilled vibe there when full If out with a bunch of friends for a party, but food not great and set menu overpriced.
Without a doubt one of the nicest experiences!food is good, and they serve it all day!
I Love the concept of a long unstressed dinner accompanied by cocktail buckets.
Ultra relaxed and laid back venue, great service, brilliant menu and awesome setting.
Great Mozambiquecan like experience
Its a good place to be with your friends
Best place ever, awesome food and great drinks! Had such a job!
It would be wrong to give only negative feedback, the lady behind the bar was friendly and helpful, unfortunately, the food was disappointing for the price, the toilets for the ladys were definitely not to standard. I cant say I would return in a hurry.
Poor service, zero value for money, avoid
Unique dining experience

Rustic, excellent food and vibe
Not bad
Very poor service...
A very disappointing experience, not visiting there again .
The food was good but the facilities are starting to feel neglected and there was no running water for most of the toilets and showers.
What a place! Be prepared for a long afternoon over lunch!
