Home to East Londons legendary local newspaper, a storied masthead associated with courageous journalism. A previous editor Donald Woods had to flee into exile as he was persecuted for his journalism by the Apartheid authorities. His story was later reflected in the major film Cry Freedom. Today it still bangs the drum of local journalism with episodes of provocative investigative reporting which hark back to its glory days. Many major South African journalist count a stop at the Dispatch as part of their careers.
