Serenity , peace and calm wharfs through your entire being when you visit. The spiritual atmosphere is uplifting and welcoming to all who enter. Shed your worries and leave it at the feet of God. Open seven days a week for your spiritual journey. All welcome. Educated priests help you with prayer if needed.

***NOTICE***The temple is beautiful and peaceful. The Gurus are very helpful and accommodating. Whats disappointing is that the temple parking isnt safe. This past Saturday we had our car broken into and we have heard of so many more cases of theft within the temple parking thereafter. We had all of our stuff stolen and when brought to the temple offices attention, nothing was done except for the security guard being screamed at. It seems that this is an ongoing issue and there isnt any notifications to warn the public of same. If you do visit the temple, please be aware of you surroundings and ensure that you dont leave anything of value in your vehicle/s.

The Umgeni Road Temple has services the needs of the community for over century and it still stands strong and provides a spiritual pillar for the local community. The place is easily accesible on Umgeni road and there is ample parking on the grounds. It is a peaceful place and tucked behind the walls and surrounded by trees, one would not believe that you are in the middle of the city with factories beside and lots of vehicles passing by - still, this place is quiet and peaceful. Here is more info about the temple which was taken from the book titled The Hindu Heritage in South Africa and published by the South African Hindu Maha Sabha in 1960.WELL over 80 years ago a group of venture-some Tamilians, prominent amongst whom were Messrs. M. Ramsamy Naicker, N. Go¬paulsamy, A. Colundaveloo Pillay, M. Sinap¬pen Pillay, conceived the idea of having a public place of worship in the centre of the city.Mr. Ramsamy Naicker came forward with a donation of a plot of land, over one acre in extent, on Umgeni Road. His noble example was readily emulated by Mr. Narayana Pather who made a generous gift of two adjoining plots, each over an acre in extent. In 1899 the land was transferred to the Stree Vaithia¬natha Easperar Temple which was established to propagate the form of worship according to Hindu religious practices, customs and tenets. The value of the land then was about £150 an acre. The temple was designed and built in con¬formity with the Dravidian style of architecture in a setting of palm trees, planted by the trustees. In addition to the Sanithanam and Mandalam there is a spacious courtyard. It is Shaivite in ideology. The original temple was demolished about 20 years ago and in its place a new one was constructed with sub¬sidiary buildings. It is one of the most prom¬inent temples in the country. Later Vishnu and Amman temples were also erected. The temple has a very large congregation from in and around Durban as well as far beyond it. During festivals and elections a great deal of activity and excitement prevail, Devotees come to it daily from all parts of the country and from all Indian linguistic groups.
