Thoroughly enjoyed the visit and no cover charge! A safe, clean, well maintained and unique nature reserve.. combination of surf, river and mangrove swamp. A boardwalk throughout makes it an easy and family friendly walk, to view the crabs and nature.Opened every 3rd Saturday 8am to 1pm. Donations welcomed.
A refreshing nature reserve in the city, Very beautiful with lots of amazing trees , it was very fascinating to see the crabs in their environment, we walked for about 20 minutes on our little trail. (edit) on the second visit we took the other trail which leads you out straight to the beach.. Absolutely perfect. Please do not litter whilst there or anywhere else for that matter!!!!!Important to note they are open once a month every 3rd Saturday of the month from 8am to 1pm. Enjoy good people I highly recommend a visit here.(grab a black bag and help clean up the beach, Theres volunteers cleaning up at almost every visit)
An island of tranquility within an urban setting, this is a well-maintained and safe place (when guides are around). The nature reserve offers guided tours along an extensive boardwalk that meanders through the thick mangroves. A well curated reserve with signs on trees and the useful habitats. Every Durbanite should visit this secret gem, a stone throw from the city centre.Well done to the volunteers, Ezemvelo and WESSA !!
Very informative signs all along about fauna and flora, lovely afternoon walk.Clean well maintained facilities.
So glad I finally made it to the right side of the Mangroves. The boardwalks are sturdy. The ecosystem is preserved. Lots of crabs. Beautiful trees. Walked through it to get to the beach for a cleanup. Cant believe youre in Durban city when youre in the Mangroves.
Great day out for the kids. Lots of crabs and really well maintained
They have different parts for all types of vehicle and very friendly too...
Great place to take family for an outing in the Mangroves. Crabs 🦀 an other life to experience.
A nature trail in durban. Why travel out so far when we can wait for the 3rd Saturday of every month to visit this trail haven in the heart of durban. The tour guides were very friendly & informative. Nice place. To take the kids to learn about a piece of nature & take amazing pics.
Great place for birders. Naturalist and great walks educational and very informative for locals and tourists alike. Get there early for parking and first on the boardwalks..
Too goodNatural peaceful place
I cant believe that in all the time Ive lived in Durban, I havent visited this gem before. We went there for a plant fair, and took a very pleasant stroll along the boardwalks, among the mangroves. Hundreds of bright orange-red crabs scuttle along the sands, shyly retreating to their holes if disturbed. The mangroves are fascinating, and next time Id like to take a guided tour to learn more about this incredible ecosystem.
Lovely piece of nature in the middle of the city. Glad to see conservation is going well too project the indigenous fauna and flora.
Every third weekend, great place to go with children and learn about a different ecosystem.
World class site
It a wonderful peaceful place close to the beach
The mangroves are beautiful. There is a promonade for cycling, running, and walking ext. There is also an active pond for radio controlled boats ext. But the pollution of plastic and fisherman leaving rubbish is shocking
Well maintained. Beautiful!
Beautiful place
A great experience for adults and kids alike!
Its one of the relaxed environment if u like such places
Lovely little Reserve. Information well posted along the walkways.
If you are visiting please do so in a BIG group. I was there over the weekend unfortunately my friend and i were robbed at gunpoint for our phones and money, we did not go in dressed in expensive clothing or anything or flash our phones around . please be safe when going here and DO NOT GO in small groups or alone.
Need for more signs to show exactly where the place is. We drove around it not sure where the entrance was,but once we found it we were sold. Beautiful, peaceful and breath taking. I like how we forgot that we were a actually in the city. It was quiet..no traffic noise of anything.
Better than expected and our kids (7,5 and 2) loved spotting the crabs in the Mangroves. Well kept boardwalks and safe outing. Be sure to check if its open before going.
Access only on 3rd Sat monthly, 8am – 1pm. Early is best.Great boardwalks through the mangrove swamps. The guides were so informative and friendly. Lots of crabs and mudskippers to be seen and I went on a night walk to see chameleons. I liked the path to the beach too. Great to have such a cool spot right so close to the city.
Lovely place. You just need to mak sure you not in a small group, rather a large one in order to be safe.
Need to book before you go there. Very educational. Excellent for kids. Safe walking area on elevated boardwalk leading onto the beach. You may walk on the beach either south towards the umgeni river mouth or north towards Virginia.
A beautiful experience thank you to the volunteers who make it a great experience. Taking a guided tour makes it a way better experience
Very informative guided walk and a guided bird walk hosted on the 3rd Saturday of every month from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The guides are superb and the walk is very easy with both a slow pace and a short distance. Travel through the various habitats and learn why this protected area is so important, else just take an easy amble through the reserve and enjoy the beauty and fresh air. It really feels as if you are transported to a different place and time. Highly recommended for both kids and adults alike.
Very interesting. Never knew there were such a variety of crabs. Absolutely amazing
Important and necessary conservation area. Not bad for a little outing. Takes about 35 minutes to do the whole thing. Must he honest I was expecting a bit more. Deffinitely something u only do once
Well conserved mangrove forest surrounded by many coastal plants. Board walks give access to the muddiest sections. Pleasant place for picnics.A very active and effective Honorary Officer group assists with training school children.
It looks great we had a great time, even though we didnt do a full tour since they were busy cleaning the area but yeah it was great.
Nice but very polluted
It could be better if they had better safety procedures in place. Go with a crowd to enjoy
Great nature experience where you can see a lot of birds, as well as the local crabs.Facilties are excellent, clean and well managed.
Its a nice place to visit, especially for conservationists. Getting to know information about Red, Black and White Mangroves and how they interact with the environment.
Beautiful accept for the plastic waste
The place has got a very nice board walk that leads you to the beach, you gotta love learning about the mangroves as you walk through.
Love the bird life. Little cheeky crabs too❤
Perfect experience I will go there time and again.
A Proudly South African tourist experience. Unique, well maintained, safe, educational, and otherworldly. Highly recommend for both adults and children.
Mlu is absolutely amazing!!! His knowledge on the plant life and animal life was incredible!! Place was so fascinating!!! Loved every minute!!!
Well kept. Tranquil. Relaxing
Should be open to the public for hire. Currently only available to groups. Great for outdoor private functions
Kids will love this. Youre guaranteed to see dozens and dozens of crabs at a time and get to feed them the Mangrove leafs in their natural habitat. If its a sunny day, take a sunhat because the boardwalk tour can be a bit long. Enough parking space and picnic area.
Great experience
We were there for the beach cleanup following the floods. There were so many people willing to help and it was really great to see. The whole mangrove and lagoon area was really badly polluted with trash and it was so sad to see such a beautiful natural habitat so messed up and damaged.
Its a viable place. Good for a weekend gateway
The braai area is so wonderful and walking along the boardwalk is not only relaxing but so interesting. 10/10 would recommend.
Wonderful place for friends and family to just relax snd unwind..... Durban is a great City that has all the amenities right at our doorstep.
Beautiful
Super boardwalk through mangroves. Very picturesque, just some drunk locals spreading rubbish and very noisy, spoilt the whole experience.
Beautiful place! But just please take a packet with you and remember to pick up some litter :)
It was informative and interesting learning about the ecosystem within the mangrove.
Secluded, scenic area close to nature. Entrance is very hard to find. Nice place for a family reunion or special party.
Lovely nature walk on the edge of town with beach access
More than anything you can enjoy in the middle of city. Totally enjoy the crab observation.
Durban Green Corridors canoe experience. Excellent staff and sevice
An unexpected hidden gem of a nature reserve under the highway between Durban and the north coast. Very informative guide and an amazing ecological success story.
Good
With the money and a good learning experience. So sad when you get to te beach, only to find it littered with plastic. Suggest that all fishermen and hikers visiting the beach collect one bag of plastic (compulsory).
Never knew about this in Durban.. And the team from Durban Green corridor was great
Beautiful beach and safe. Stunning views
Its a wonderful place for children to learn about nature.
Took the grade 4s on a field trip. They learnt a great deal on nature conservation.
The place is nice and neat, nice place to just relax or take a walk
Great facility and guides to show the Mangroves habitat. Must see.
Excellent, but for the best experience get there shortly after high tide.
Very nice family outing, you can arrange for a guided tour.
Mangrove area is well and carefully conserved by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. You can see the mud hopping fish and crabs which enjoy refuge here. There is an elevated boardwalk that will allow you to wander around and go to the seashore. Picnic area is available, but contact Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife for further details.
Its a nice place to have your year end function party
Very pleasant for an adequate distance walk. Peaceful and quiet.
Lovely for the family to walk through the mangroves found it very interesting and peaceful
This easily passed over spot is open from 8am on the first Saturday of the month...perfect for a quick escape from the city life...
Beautiful place of nature. Exciting trails to enjoy. Dont go alone and be prepared to endure alot of pollution.
Awsome spot to get into nature
Same as the lagoon just more space to enjoy the picnic
Enjoyed our visit once again...
