What a gem, we were looking for a place to eat at while staying the night in Clarens and came across this restaurant. Great atmosphere, tasty food, awesome beer !! What more could you ask for !!
Another brewery seems to be rated the best in Clarens. I must disagree, visited both, this one and Roter Hahn and Roter Hahn is hands down by far the better, if not the best in Clarens. Great local and imported beer, a serious menu and platters that you just cannot stop eating. Well its back there again tonight for dinner, need to give the German Hamburger a go.
Brilliant food and atmosphere. A must visit.
Terrible service. Waiter sat us down and disappeared. Had to go ask someone for service. They were not very busy or understaffed, waiters were just walking around not doing much. Saw two couples get up and leave because of lack of service. Moreover, when our drink finally came my can was full of dirt on top AND they sat us at a table with a broken glass and didnt clean it. Glass shards were jusy lying there. If you want good food, good service and FRIENDLY staff, go to Clarens Brewery. Their burgers are 16/10.
Like the vibe. Try the cherry beer.
Hope you get Grace as your waitress, she makes sure ones glasses are full 👌🏻
Service appalling...No attention given to guestsFood delivered one person at a time..first person finished eating by the time the last client food arrived
Great food we had a blast. The portion size is just a bit too big so make sure you have a huge apatite
Aweful, aweful, aweful!!! No one at the door. Waited 15 minutes for someone to take our drinks order, another 15 minutes for the drinks to arrive. Waiter brought us someone elses food, we hadnt even ordered yet. No one came to take our food order, after 1 hour we left. This is the second bad experience in a year! Never going back again!!
Large selection of imported beer. Good food and lekker atmosphere
Severe lack of service. Should consider rebranding as Rotten Hahn...👀
Little piece of German culinary delight under our noses here in Clarens.+s:-german folk music playing in the background-great stoep with outside heating-German beer obvs-Any sort of worst you could wish for-Any sort of pork dish (hello Eisbein) you could wish for-s:-Would wish for more alcohol free beer options (this will likely come in time)
Friendly service and good food in German flavors
Worst experience of a restaurant ever. No one greeted us at the door. No one said goodbye. Our food was an hour late. Just for burgers. No apologies..... So so sad.
Rugby so noisy I could not enjoy my meal with my friends.....very sad, because the food is exellent
Not sure if it is the owners, but a rude elderly white gentleman and lady behind the till. We do understand that they were fully booked for the evening, but we walked in and had a bottle of wine. Then they came and took the menus away from us. We couldnt order food at 2pm. Attitude was poor. They have no understanding of customer service. The man, which I cant say is a gentleman, gave us such a rude look and so unhelpful. You should retire old man.
Absolutely worst service ever!
Good food. VERY bad service.
We were pleasantly surprised to find that Roter Hahn has an even better beer selection than the Clarens brewery. This classic beer garden has great views and Belgian and German brews. We had excellent service from Romeo. The food and baked goods looked great but we only stopped for a drink. I highly recommend.
The service was excellent, the food very German and good. The music was horrendous even though its a German place but that music was just not perfect background music. People stare a lot at outsiders, but nothing the restaurant can control. Overall great spot. The beer variety is brilliant, some German, some Belge but delicious.
Best place in Clarens for a meal and drinks. Kids play area, tasty food. Great service. Must try!
Worst service delivery!!!!The owner is running around to make sure that the food is delivered to the tables and the waiters dont really know what to do, the waiters dont have enough training. We order a beer tasting for 8 people and we only received 4 and the waiter didnt even explained why. I also ordered a plate of chips and it took more than a hour to get my chips. This restaurant has alot of potential the owner really need to work on improving the service and operations of the business. This place can be the top restaurant attractions in clarens.
Really good Austrian/German restaurant just off the main square in Clarens. Very good selection of beers and great German food. Very difficult to make a reservation because it is almost always fully booked over the weekend, but one can go early ish (between 4 and 5) because they only take bookings after 6 so it is possible to have an early dinner and a few beers.
Its a great experience to go through the little shop in front and find all the german stuff. On the day we visit the shop they played not the best german music, we have much better music then this ;-)The food is really good, the combinations of the meals are interesting, we wouldnt eat it like this in Germany ;-)The staff is awesome and the atmosphere is great. We recommend this restaurant!!
Good authentic sausages and great sauerkraut
Food, atmosphere and service are all top notch! Especially the ginger beer.Had breakfast and lunch here, and definitely coming again.I feel this place deserves many more patrons, but considering the rest of Clarens was SOO over-crowded, the peace was much appreciated!
German music, German food, German beer. Its the full German experience... In Clarens! The fact that so many of their meals come with ALL the sides (you dont have to choose) is just the best thing ever. I would really recommend the schnitzels! They were amazing. And their brezels are great too. We had an array of beers at the table.
So we saw two negative reviews. I feel like insulting those people, we had a phenomenal meal. Service was great, food was delightful and the beer was icy cold.Definitely worth a stop!
Really great venue, good (unique) food, great German beer and friendly service. The imported beers are expensive, so be prepared for that. Booking is also essential for Saturdays and sometimes Fridays.
Nothing beats an owner run restaurant if the owner knows what he wants out of his business. Roter Hahn is a perfect example of a restaurant and menu that were perfect plan and tweaked to suit the South African palet and fuse this with German cuisine. We spent 5 hours at Roger Hahn tonight. The staff were great and the food was top shelve. This is a well balanced restaurant with something for everyone. We had the beer tastingFlat breadSausage bowlFrikedelsRibsEvery one of them were devine
Had the Erdinger Dunkel and it was a little sour Told the barman who only said we never have a complaint about it No offer to exchange it!! Am disinclined to come back which is a pity as it offers an interesting alternative to the other Clarens bars Good range in the delicatessen, both food and beer Sadly so often people fail to realise a bad experience leads to loss of business I told the lady owner the beer was not right (I have drunk it in Germany), and I bought some rusks and Bratwurst from the delicatessen She apologized profusely and only charged me at cost for the beer - so some positive response
Bad service. Rather give it a skip much better restaurants in Clarens.
Nice atmosphere nice food
Absolutely poor service.
Wonderful German cuisine!Beautiful view from the deck!Staff went out of their way to accommodate us!
The food, the beer the atmosphere, everything about Roter Hahn is excellent. We came for the weekend to Clarens and ended up eating here three times. That says it all. Thanks Charles and Romeo for everything. We thoroughly enjoyed it
There is a wide selection of Belgium and German beers on the menu - some are available on tap. Great menu with so many delicious options. We went for a couple of platters and were not disappointed however we will be back to try some of the other options. The view from the balcony is amazing and is complimented by professional and friendly waiting staff.
Worst prepared Eisbein. Lamshank very bland. Used to be a create restaurant not anymore. Seems Covid affected this restaurant or maybe this is there excuse. Sad sad sad
Bad service - average food.
Food was amazing but service needs some attention
Good food and service. Great atmosphere.
Nice place, service is just terrible.
Food was great but service poor as priority is given to bigger tables
Nice atmosphere but food average, staff good
Great food, good service......
Excellent food. Great ambiance. Warm and competent staff
Nice vibe, excellent food, very good selection of German and other beers, a lot on tap, nice selection of wines
Great venue and a fantastic German experience. Lots of German beer and a good variety of German food. Will definitely be back
Easily one of my favorite places in clarens. Away from the hustle and bustle. Great food, good beer and friendly staff. Love this place
Terrible food and terrible service. I had the pork schnitzel which took forever to arrive and was raw in the middle. The eisbein was crispy but dry. Just getting drinks was a nightmare. Charged for drinks we never had. First time in Clarens which is beautiful but never again in this restaurant.
Not a really pleasant place if you not Afrikaans no welcome a lot of eyes and the service was none existing and couldn’t get us out of there fast enough even it was only 1/3 full ... just don’t go there :-/
We were seated at a table @16:00. We wanted to order food but was told by the apparent manager of this restaurant that the kitchen only opens @17:30 so we said cool, well wait and had a few beers. While we were seated there the table we sat at got booked for 18:30 and we were told to leave before then while this same manager placed this insipid reservation sign right infront of our faces. Then when we started to see food coming out and being served well before 17:30?! It was very clear to me that it wasnt the reservation process or the kitchen being closed but the fact that we werent served because we were GAY. We received foul, hateful glares and stares from staff and manager alike. It is very clear to me that Roter Hahn is a GAY HATING ESTABLISHMENT. AVOID THIS HATE BREEDING PREMISES AT ALL COSTS WHEN IN CLARENS!
The food is intemedatingly big portions with no option on side dishes, which is not realy nice. Not ever one like cole and weird vegies. Having been to Germany, they do not all eat this way, only the very old once. The plus of Roter Hahn is the VERY nice baked goodies to buy at the front! Hertzogies, fudge and so much more.
Fun, delicious, vibey, tastey - everything you could ask for.
Lovely place with great food and drink. Friendly staff and great views.
Awesome place with good vibe and enjoy the German style... Waiters looks funky in german outfits...
Quality food, extremely good value for money and friendly personnel, even the fireplace burning on a rainy night.Well done guys, I am a retuning customer
Decent German food. Great selection of beers. Slow food service.
Such a cool experience of German food and beverage.
Great food. Service is a little slow
Nice German atmosphere. Good food
The variety of beers is amazing. The atmosphere is definitely Bavarian style. The variety of foods was also good but the breads did not seem very fresh. Maybe an off day? I would still recommend a visit!
Great food, tasty beer. Highly recommend Roter Hahn for a German Restaurant experience.
Great food with friendly staff at affordable prices
