Curious, fascinating museum and a lovely old school tea garden hidden away in the beautiful surroundings of a quiet little pocket of Centurion. Younger Smuts a remarkably resemblance Daniel Craig, who will play him within the decade, in an awkward epic critique of British liberal racist imperial splendour.

Great day out with the kids, safe open and friendly. We walked the 2.3km trial with great elevated views of Irene and Centurion. The restaurant features liquor license, great steak and burger & chips. Have a English Scone, jam and cream with tea under the trees. Jungle gym and jumping castle. You can also visit the Jan Christian Smuts House museum or have a picnic on the grounds.Extra tips: Dog friendly. If you want to explore the area on bikes or motorcycles park your vehicle safely inside the grounds (R10 per vehicle) and have a sundowner afterwards at restaurant.

Used the picnic facilities, wooden furniture dilapidated and dirty, yet you have to pay R15 per person. Grounds not maintained, no grass at picnic site. Is aware it is just after winter. Nice jungle gym for kids. Will not visit or recommend this site for picnic.

The Smuts House is an amazing place to visit and go back in time to an important time in our countrys history. Well kept and very informative. The house and the property is the actual residence in where general Smuts lived. There is a picnic area on the property as well as Ouma Issies Restaurant, named after general Smuts wife. The menu catera for breakfast and light lunch and the food is amazing, fresh and very well priced. Ideal place to host small functions such as baby showers, birthday parties etc.The property also has a big picnic area where visitors can bring their own food and drink and spend the day with the family under the huge old trees with a few ox-wagon randomely parked between thetrees. Bring camping chairs if you plan on a picnic, as this area is not completely covered with grass.Over weekends one can do runs on the adjacent property with Adventure Trails with distances between 2.5km and 15km along the Sesmylspruit and in the koppie behind Smuts House. These hikes / runs are pet friendly. We visit Smuts House at least once a month and it is really a gem.

Its an awesome hidden place, although there is very little signage (driving there you might get the feeling of being lost) once you get there you will be surprised with how much is hidden behind the trees. The is plenty of parking. The parking will cost you R10 at the entrance. There are restaurants, a museum, old stuff and more old stuff, a walking trail and many more relics..I advise you read a bit before you rock up.- plenty of

Food and service has always been great in the many years that I have been frequenting Ouna Issies Tea Garedn. Taking your furry child is also a bonus. A refreshing time out to just relax. The Place of Quiet offers you the opportunity to just be stil and reflect on whatever may be on your mind. For the more active, the 2.3 km Oubaas Trail that takes you to the top where the monument is, is well worth the walk with beautiful views. I can strongly recommend as a nice morning or day out.

Its a little expensive for the restaurant and its a small kitchen so on busy days you might be waiting for your order a while, buts its really about the quaint, quiet atmosphere anyway, and the food is delicious. Museum is great and hiking trails are great for quick hikes, especially if you have a dog, great for a day out

A must see for all South Africans. A strong, convicted politician, not perfect, yet obviously clearly not moved by material things. Highly intelligent, respected the world over, highly accomplished in many diverse arenas - politics, philosophy, botany; right down to his detailed fascination with herbs and grasses - who would have thought. Incredible homestead focusing more on the natural than the material. Much food for thought; and a beautiful shaded Tea Room set in peaceful Green Gardens all the more to make it a wonderful yet informative outing for the family. Well worth a visit - well worth the donation/adult to view the house - but allow at least an hour to carefully read through and internalise everything; just as it was when Smuts was there - even to the untouched, clearly expansive, fascinating personal library!

The residence of the prominent South African Statesman Jan Smuts. The house has been well maintained and includes many historic relics that provide quite an interesting glimpse back in time, and paint a portrait of whom Jan Smuts was an the role he played in the early days of the Republic of South Africa. The tour is not very expensive and there is a free 30min hike up to the Smuts family memorial that provides some scenic views where one would not expect to find them. There is also a market held every weekend showcasing goods produced by locals. So i would recommend a visit then.

If you have driven the black Cadilac or slept on the horse hair bed ...Then we are equals ...There is a long story here ...Lets just say that I was a VIP driver in 1985 and had both such opportunities. .. and it was as a result of boredom whilst waiting for the late night whiskey lubricated meetings to run dry ...Enough said ... I have not just seen history ... I have relived, felt and dreamt it too.(I have also had the distinct privilege of looking upon the white sands of the Shoshi River from South African soil ... Whilst watching the baboons border breach from Zimbabwe on the right ... to Botswana on the left ... all the while very comfortably seated on international Statesman General Jan Smuts doorless brick sh*t house! ) LOL

This place has historic significance. The presence of a great South African - General Jan Smuts and Issie in this their home is palpable. His spartan life style, his connection with great events such as the South African War, both World Wars, the founding of the United Nations and his interest in botany and philosophy. Very well worth a visit. There is a small coffee kiosk and outdoor dining area. The original corrugated iron re-used British officers mess building from 1900 and converted to a home is there. His official car used during the 1940s together with ordinance such as howitzers and other military vehicles scattered about the grounds can be seen. The walk to Smuts koppie is worth doing for experiencing the peacefulness of the surrounding unaltered veld. Takes one back to another era.
