Im one of the many 44 000 South African Covid-19 volunteers on the Janssen (J&J) research program.Synexus are an amazing company who research many other serious SA diseases besides the current C-19 virus.-> By the way the Synexus C-19 vaccine research result is showing a 84% efficacy rate against the C-19 virus plus against serious infection (hospitalization) as well as against the new variant too.-> The J&J vaccine has been chosen by Goverment to be the first vaccination to be adminstered to all our frontline workers as well as essential workers.-> With a 84% efficacy rate it is a winner & many of the volunteers (young & old) are so glad to be a part of this research.

Disaster from A-Z. Scheduled a telephone interview to participate in a Covid vaccine trial. They confirmed, sent me the invite, sent a reminder .... and didnt pitch. Called them to find out what was going on... nobody knew nothing about nothing. Some time later, they called back, did the interview and said they would now send me a form to complete and we could start.Again...nothing.If they are as meticulous with their studies as they are with their admin, I would strongly recommend to stay away from them. Everything from the way they answer the phone up to they way they conduct their surveys left the most unprofessional impression to me. Wouldnt be surprised to see them operating from the back of a garage.2 Weeks laterAfter I had expressed my concerns, they eventually managed to set up a date and sent me a link to a Study Hub that should guide me through the process.- No Study details were given, the link on the Study Hub says Page under Construction.- When I got there, they took me to a room where I had to listen to some recorded, more detailed information. ONLY THEN did they give the information they should have given way in advance:- Your medical aid scheme can cause some major problems if you participate in the study. You must speak to them BEFORE participating. But they only inform you about this right before you shall get the vaccine.- They only give you R350 as a compensation, but you must come out several times throughout the following year (side info: Participants in a German Covid vaccine trial received EUR700, i.e. appx R14,000)- You must not get any other Covid vaccine for the following 2 years, even if you receive only the placebo. So theres no chance you could get protection or find out if you are protected as they dont tell you whether youve received the vaccine or the placebo.So to sum it all up:- Important information was withheld until RIGHT BEFORE the vaccine trial.- You support a trial with your own body and get a R350 compensation while Johnson&Johnson will earn billions (not ZAR but $$$$) with your data.- You exclude yourself from getting another vaccine for 2 years. Even if you have only received the placebo. So there is a 50% likelihood that you will be unprotected for 2 years, while you were actually keen on getting the vaccine immediately.I decided to leave without participating. I think the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) should look into the processes of Synexus.
