The hospital is great. Its the doctors or nurses and staff that makes the place either memorable or horrific.Ive been attending e16 outpatient dept for the past 33yrs and have usually had a pleasant experience. Possibly because I have a lot of patience and wait quietly. I dont kick up a fuss with staff as they are also just doing their jobs to the best of their ability under strenuous and difficult circumstances (covid for one )However, the doctor I saw was everything you hate in Drs.Cut a long story short, I was told there is nothing that can be done for me anymore.I had a little meltdown in the room, tears running down my face but not making any noise. I was looked at and repeated, there nothing we can do for the pain.Ive been crying for two days and still tear up now writing this.33yrs living with sarcoidosis and the last 10 or so years living in pain from mild to excruciating. Every single day, every part of my body. The one time I decided to open up and tell my pulmo I cannot handle any more pain, dont know what to do about it, thats the response I get.I sat crying in the public corridor till I could proceed calmly on my way.Getting back to the actual building,Groote Schuur Hospital is iconic and historic. There are numerous spaces filled with history. Descriptions and actual pieces that were used from days gone by.Herewith are a few pics I managed on my way out.

I would like to extend my gratitude to Jolene Woolley from the Neurology Department in Groote Schuur Hospital. On the 30 August I called the department to ask my doctor for a new script. This lovely lady answered the phone, she was polite and patient. She promised to speak to my doctor and call me to give feedback. Indeed on the 1st September she called me with the script ready for collection. When I told her I need to find someone I can ask to collect for me, she offered to send it to me via email. She was helpful and informative as well. In my experience with hospital staff especially when calling health facilities, I have never experienced such excellent service. Big ups to you Jolene, keep it up my dear👍🏽👍🏽. South Africa needs more public servants like. I hope Groote Schuur Hospital Management acknowledges you and your good work. You are the bestest👌🏾.

Amazing is what I have to say about the dedicated Drs and nurses who cared for me in my hour of need.Being hospitalized from July to September is no childs play. I had covid and unfortunately, I had to be sedated for 2wks for oxygen, my family went through hell as I was not getting better, ontop of that I got an infection pseudomonus, Drs were not sure Ill make it but through the Grace of God he blessed their hands and I recovered. Currently on physio and Ill forever be greatful.

Grootte Schuur Hospital Covid Testing Department is really excellent. Free Covid Testing. More stars are needed here for management and staff involved. Grootte Schuur has excellent service and employees working there in general.Thank you to Nurse Waybah that recommended that I do my covid test at Grootte Schuur Hospital. Nurse Waybah is amazing for suggesting this. Thank you ❤️My husband was admitted for covid there. Her suggestion saved me time of having to find a place to do it, the test is done at a newly created section at P4, the hospital parking area. I parked at the parking just before that. This hospital is so well managed. The parking attendant and security was so helpful. 5 stars. Each testing person is offered a chair, that they will use and carry with them when they move to the next seating area, until they have tested. A light plastic one. I saw some Hospital staff also tests there. Very efficient. Some testing stations charge about R850 for this test, some medical aids do it for you, but make you pay for it, if you tested negative. This service was so well done and Free. They have very clean toilets set up, with paper if you need. Sanitiser all over. Someone takes your details when you start, be sure to give your cellphone number for whatsapp communication later.Enough staff on duty. Everyone seated looks happy. When its your turn, you have an option of doing the test yourself, no one forcing anything in your nose over here. They use a long cotton bud that goes in your nostril for a sample up there. After the test they give you information that is in all our languages, for easy understanding of what you need to know, if you test positive or negative, it also has a list for people you have been in contact with, this is very important, also in the info, they have a covid whatsapp number if you need a certificate sent to you or for questions relating to the test. This number has someone that actually responds in good time. My test was done in about an hour. An amazing experience. Grootte Schuur is well staffed and well organised. Remember to be nice and smile and thank the heroes working there. ❤️

After eventually reaching the correct location, I was denied treatment even though I had a referral from a GP. The department had adequate staff and time available for treatment, but I was told I HAD to go elsewhere. I ended up in the emergency department later that evening as I was not treated.I filed a complaint with the hospital and initially received a response, but the woman quit responding in the middle and the case was never sorted.

Not as good as it used to be back in the old days. Most of the doctors are students and they just have an IDEA with working with patients not EXPERIENCE. The oncology department sucks the nurses often get tired of being of assistance to the patients. The fact that every time you go you see a different doctor makes it an even more excruciating experience. Your problem is never attended to by one person which makes it difficult. Having one personal doctor is better. It is not always clean. If youre in the trauma unit it takes forever to get into a ward. Truly and honestly this is not the best hospital. Not sure if there is room for improvement.

......Wow! Haven’t visited this establishment in many years and not much has change in the way of the building and outer surroundings! But what’s changed is that you now have to pay for your parking, when you enter you’re issued with a receipt and when you exit there is a little cashier behind a fenced in room where you have to pay because the stamped slip is collected! Must say the ward areas on most floors which we passed was clean and the walls all over are decorated with photos and pictures which probably have been drawing by the children! The only downside is the story of getting lost in this maze of a building is you’re unfamiliar with the ward set-up! Even the wards didn’t smell of hospital which in days passed used to be the case!.....

At first it was daunting to have a loved one admitted to a state hospital but we met so many loving and caring nursing staff, doctors, porters, security staff etc that in the end we left feeling sad that we were leaving people we had formed bonds with. Yes, the hospital is not always perfect since its so large with hundreds passing through its doors each day.Having said that, their processes are ordered and strict and that ensures that things run smoothly to the benefit of the patients in their care. Looking back now, we can fully appreciate the work done at Groot Schuur in caring for the people of the Western Cape and beyond. What a terrible hospital. I had the privilege of seeing that hospital in the 70s. The place was immaculate. Because I had no medical aid my husband was forced to go to Groot Schuur. I initially had no problem as my perception of the hospital was still embedded in my mind. Was I in for a shock. That hospital has so deterioted, it was heartbreaking. Cardiology C26 where my husband laid due to his heart attack was still okey. But the rest was a nightmare. Casualty being our first stop was disgusting. A doctor had to pick up an empty syringe from his desk and throw it in the bin. Clearly he was disgusted but did not say anything. Miserable staff and doctors alike in casualty. AND there attitude leave a lot to be desired. Apartheid may have been bad, but losing your human dignity is worst. You are treated less than human in casualty. Their is absolutely no compassion. And they have the nerve to ask me if we on medical aid. Did they really think if I was on medical aid I would be there. Sad very sad.

Friday morning I went in at 10am and was received warmly by a lovely nurse, Sasha Adonis who made me feel so relaxed. After a short wait I saw a gynaecologist, quick and very efficient. In no time my treatment started. I was preparing myself for a long painful experience but I was escorted to f12 where a bed awaited me and the rest of my treatment started. Nurses were warm and friendly and checked up on all the patients regularly. I was in a ward with 3 others. Servicing the southern suburbs and broader City of Cape Town, Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) is a government-funded teaching hospital which has been operating since 1938.The hospital also forms part of the academic and training arm of the University of Cape Towns (UCT) medical department. They produce well trained, skilled doctors, surgeons and professionals who form part of the GSH team.Considering that its a state facility, the service provided by the hospital is outstanding, responsible, and accountable, and the cost is minimal. The staff are well trained and incredibly helpful. If youre an outpatient, I do recommend arriving before 7am to avoid a long wait.

In the morning she was nt washed even though the whole ward was washed. Her bed was wet and she put the blanket on the side that ended up on the floor. The man that brought morning coffee asked why it was there. After she told him its wet, he said you cant throw things on the floor and she then struggled to pull it back on the bed until a young nurse started her shift and came to her aid.The laughing and shout and persistent talking all night long while patients try to recover. She worked at hospital many years ago.I understand its a government hospital but is that how we treat our elders. Is that what our tax money pays for? Hard food tasteless mealie meal porridge. For the past few months, since July 2017 I have been a cancer patient at Groote Schuur and during this time, also had to undergo two operations as a result of my cancer. The treatment I have received up to now,is the best that I can think of.There is definitely no other hospital where you will receive the same qualitative treatmentLaken Jade I totally disagree with you.Your experience is unfortunately exeptional. As a cancer patient of Groote Schuur since July 2017,I underwent 2 serious operarions.During this time I have admitted to ward F 26.The care that I received and still receive,is the best in South Africa and in Africa. In January 2018 I will be admitted there for 6 weeks Radiation treatment.I go there because I know that I will be in very good and extremely capable handsTo all the people that are critisizing Groote Schuur for the lifts, rudiness and dirtiness, please take note of the following;Since 16 January 2018 up to 21 January 2018 I have been treated for cancer at Groote Schuur.I therefore have a very intimate knowledge of this hospital. This is the cleanest hospital I have ever encountered. The staff are extremely helpfull and very effecient.During this time I have never encountered a rude person.I trust Groote Schuur with my life.Thank God for a hospital like this

Staff really needs to know their telephone codes because they keep sending me to different wards and doctors private numbers when i asked to speak to a family member who was admitted. unbelievable
