We had a Tesla Solar system installed in Oct 2020. The team was on time, efficient and very neat in making the installation aesthetically pleasing. This was a retro fit into an existing home so additional care was taken for putting in the new trunk routes. After 5 months we realised that whilst our battery was sufficient, our daytime load was higher than expected. We discussed this with Smart Energy and they were able to modify the installation in an afternoon by swapping out the 3.4kWh inverter to a 5.1 kWh unit. All this was achieved IN BUDGET. We are more than happy to recommend this company and the product.

These guys are pros. Installing solar systems can be complex and we installed not only panels, inverter and batteries but also a new geyser and heat pump. John Chirwa and his team (Lucky etc.) are excellent. They have deep knowledge and kept coming back to ensure all aspects were working as they should. Even when we found that we werent getting the performance we expected, John proposed a solution and came back to install it mostly at their own cost. There were a couple of niggles after the initial installation, which was not surprising considering they overhauled the electrics of the whole house, but all were resolved. Now nearly two years later and in the middle of summer it is always exciting to have many days in a row where the sun is powering the whole house with no input from our favourite national electricity provider.

I was in the market for a complete solar installation at my residential property. I did a lot of research and obtained quotations from various suppliers. After receiving a quotation from Smart Energy SA, I decided to make use of both their services and product. It is by far the most superior and advanced system on the market, no other product comes close to the capability of their product! John, a representative visited me at my property, explained the entire process and time frame it would take to complete the installation. The entire process ran without a glitch. I have never witnessed such impeccable workmanship and tidiness. John was always on site, willing to answer all my questions. The system is fantastic and not of this world. They were very good when they installed the solar system and I would have given them at least a 4*. But then the wheels came off. I want to install a turbine and they took my R50K deposit 10 months ago and getting definitive answers from them is impossible, I even thought they were possibly going bust or something. Now worried I will lose my deposit.Well almost 3 months later. No turbine, no refund of deposit. Just a litany of promises and we will get back to you. Also waiting 10 months for a faulty panel to be repaired. Downgraded my star rating and would worry about doing business with them.2 months latter - sending a letter of demand prior to taking them to the small claims court to try and get my deposit back. Meanwhile many promises to get back to me the next day. Paid deposit June 2018

We have a fairly long history with Smart Energy and although I cant say its been smooth sailing all the way, the end result does meet my expectations. We first installed a 3 kW grid-tied system and this initial installation went smoothly with no issues. After that we added a second inverter and some batteries so we could have backup power during load shedding. This involved quite a bit of work, much of it quite complex in nature, and I sometimes got the feeling that John and his team were working at the limits of their knowledge at the time.We then added some more panels and moved some panels around to the north side of the house, to improve our solar PV output. Johns teams came to our house a lot, and they are based far from us so this did cause a few problems. In the end though, it was all sorted out. The last step was the integration of the SolarEdge and Victron systems, effectively making a hybrid system, that allows the PV inverter to continue running when the grid goes down. Rufaro and her colleagues found a clever way to integrate the two systems and we had the opportunity to test it yesterday when the load-shedding hit us. Im happy to say that it works as intended, and maximises the functionality of both systems, so that the PV system augments the back up system during load-shedding, and spares the batteries from discharging as much as before. If there is enough sun, the house carries on running on PV power, which means we dont have to spend money using Eskom power to recharge the batteries when the grid comes back on. This is great, because in these tough times, we need to save as much as possible, and its really nice to be able to just carry on (almost) as normal, and not fear the load-shedding any more. Thanks to John, Rufaro and their teams for implementing these finishing touches. When this pandemic madness is over, and if we fall on good times again, I will be contacting you to add more panels and upsize the inverters, to make us even less dependent on Eskom!

John has excellent knowledge about the product that was recommended and installed.After sales service was fantastic, though all of the issues were resolved once the CCT prepaid meter was replaced. They even fixed the geyser while they were on site.I have recommended them to other clients.The only issue I had was the duration of the installation, which took 15 days, and not 5 days as planned. This was, in my opinion, mainly due to the fact that the workers only arrived mid morning, then left mid afternoon. An issue with an incorrect part sent by the supplier also held up the installation.Get a written quote for all extra work, such as paving, etc.

By far the worst customer service I have received anywhere in South Africa, if not globally...I ordered a complex solar installation including solar panel water heating, heat pump and underfloor heating - and this turned out to be by far the worst customer service experience in my life ! The process started mid 2016 and by now the installation is still not working and missing critical documentation and certificates.The company is completely unresponsive to service requests and denies any responsibilities - instead John (apparently the main guy) became rude and demeaning and stated that there was “nothing wrong with the installation” , when clearly the heating didn’t work and the controller showed a grave error code.Despite many calls for service they never managed to repair this into a working order....and most of the time didn’t even react to service requests or plainly neglected This lead to huge extra energy consumption during the last thee years, as we had to use extra power for water heating and heating......the whole process turned into an almost nightmarish experience and will now turn legal.The only ok thing is that the actual products used were of reasonable quality (despite different from what I had ordered and paid for...), but the workmanship was of low quality and caused great damage (for example, we had two leaks in the underfloor piping which needed to be fixed retroactively with great wat effort and extra cost).

Great price, good service, quick install. Haven’t given it a thought since. Just smile every time I look at my ridiculously low bill.

Sorry that I can’t give 0 stars.Installation of a R400 000 solar plant was met with a lot of promises. Installation team is confused. So called qualified electricians can’t even pull a draw wire through conduit. Supervising staff on the job was only available at certain times. Regular threats of not getting a COC until full payment was received. Almost after 2 months of paying in full I am still waiting on the so called COC. Again with promises on when it will be sent. The only good thing is the product itself which is imported and at international standards.

Solid PV installer especially when installing SMA inverters and BMZ batteries! Go for quality products and the system will last a long time. Great work John.
