A real treasure of Newlands and a must visit if youre in the area. Worth the drive from town as well. Particularly enjoyable on a wet, rainy day .. browsing around the nursery.

Quaint place with a very wide variety of shops/stalls. Be it art, crafts, jewellery, decor etc. there’s bound to be something that catches your fancy. As with most things in Cape Town though, it is tourist focused and not always so friendly on the local pocket. But if you’re not in the mood to shop, strolling around the lovely nursery and it’s many little greenhouses is also a wonderful pastime. The Gardener’s Cottage restaurant also offers a range of meals from simple tea and scones, to more elaborate burgers and more. Enjoy a glass of wine or cup of coffee under the camphor trees or sit inside where it’s more cosy on the windy days. If you want a little bit of everything and a fuss-free day out, Montebello is a good place to try.

A superb small shopping village with lots of artisanal products for the home. You can watch artisans working including one of the few people making Xylophones, carvers making artefacts. It’s a lovely trees setting with workshops, cafes and a kombucha maker. Just five minutes drive from Kirstenbosch so tourists could combine both on one day.

A creative oasis in the heart of Newlands. Amble ithrough the forest and browse through the studios. The magic of montebello is almost tangible in the air. Pause for a cup of tea or pick up a plant on the way home. Its my feel good place.

I absolutely love visiting Montebello. Its a quiet little place in the heart of the leafy suburb of Newlands. You feel as if you are in a forest when you first enter. There are the most lovely shops (I love the beaded jewellery shop there - great for gifts) and a lovely little cafe to have something to eat. Highly recommend for breakfast/brunch or lunch. Definitely a nice place to take visitors to Cape Town.

A real Newlands institution. Despite UCTs best efforts to eliminate the place and prevent it from becoming a proper design centre it has evolved to become an important location in the area. Features a great gift shop and the fantastic Gardeners Cottage Restaurant in addition to a collection of workshops for artists and small businesses. It has been around since at least the mid-1990s. Always a great place to meet friends for a relaxing day or see the art exhibits. A real favorite for people in the surrounding area.

The design centre has lots of different crafts/crafter on offer. The restaurant is always busy and without power today, I guess they used gas to boil water for tea and coffee (not the greatest tasting coffee in the opinion of my friend and I). The eats we had were good (carrot cake - tasty but a bit dry; almond cake - nice and moist without being cloying)
