This is a very unique place in the sense that you can find snow here in the winters in South Africa. Snow can be found at the top of the mountains, but not very common to touch it and feel it in South Africa. The walk to the spot where snow can be found abundantly isnt a very difficult one and you can even drive your 4x4 there as well.Parking can be a bit of nightmare after paying the entrance fees and driving for about 3 km on a gravel road, but not impossible as long as you are willing to prak on the grass. So, this is a very pleasant, family friendly, unique spot to visit on a weekend and very much recommended.

Insanely beautiful views of the Matroosberg mountains. The 4x4 route is challenging, we have been to the peak on a previous occasion (not in snow), and I would not recommend it to a beginner in a stock standard bakkie, like I did. When there is snow, a beginner can make the drive to the viewpoint, but the drive is pretty rough. Worth the effort though!

Absolutely such a stunning place. We had a wedding there and it came out so beautifully. The snow was wonderful. We also stayed at the resort and it was quite an interesting experience. They had electrical blankets, a nice cosy fire place. Everything to keep you warm and cosy. We also had such a wonderful view of the lake which was quite lovely. I would definetly go again but be better prepared.

Absolutely loved staying at the traditional campsite. We were one of only 3 small groups in the entire massive campsite, so it was actually more private than the private campsite. Lovely, all day shade everywhere, perfect for hot summers. This is our new favourite campsite! Cherry farm nearby, rock pools for swimming, and of course hiking up Matroosberg mountain made for an awesome weekend!

Just amazing! The reserve includes the highest peak in the Boland at 2250m which sees lots of snow in the winter. ❄🏔Lots of adventures to be had in all seasons. Lots of accommodation options to choose from as well.Pre bookings essential now with the pandemic, for day visitors as well. The 4 x 4 route is technical but rideable. The route might need some management though as you can go up but is supposed to only come down after a certain time. The route is very challenging if you are the first vehicle on virgin snow, please beware.

Incredible amount of snow up there. Absolutely beautiful. Accessable to a decent height with a ordinary car. From there a easy 3km walk up finds you in the middle of a winter wonderland. Best to go super early before the sun gets a grip in there. Also aim for the day directly after a major coldfront where there has been decent amounts of white frosting. Take cash with you. When its busy they will collect cash from cars on entry like a drive through. Side note - on a cold morning EVERYTHING is frozen solid. Every puddle. The sand you drive and walk on is solid ice and it is mega slippery. Drive slow, walk carefully. If you have spiked shoes or hiking sticks these will go a long way to helping you walk along. Temperatures are deceptively cold up there. So cold in fact that one of our phones turned off from the cold. Forecast was neg 9deg C for some weather site in matroosberg. I can well believe it was at least that cold. One puddle was about 10cm thick block of nice I couldnt break. Down in ceres it was 2 deg and a night and day difference in temperature. Highly recommended! We will go back.

This is a great place to camp, but we had a bad experience at the restaurant. There’s also no baby changing facilities, there’s a big pool in the middle of the space with no net so don’t let small kids run around freely, and the parking isn’t paved so when it’s wet or snow you’ll walk through slippery mud (I was literally bracing myself for a slip). You can take beautiful pictures there though.

Brilliant, our first time driving out to see the snow, what an awesome experience! Kiosk a little primitive, but who cares, we came for nature, and we had a lovely time driving on muddy jeep tracks through rivers and playing in the snow! Watch the weather during winter for snow days, plan it well, leave early cause you need to be out at 4pm, unless you booked a bed, or brought a tent! Enjoy!

The staff were really efficient, answered all my questions, gave us directions and advise that turned out to be correct. The reserve is beautiful, I will go back to explore more. The roads are not great, a 4x4 would have been preferable, but we could get far enough and walk the rest of the way to enjoy the snow.We ate at the eatery which was efficient, good enough food to keep us all happy. Not great vegetarian options, we tried the cheesy chips with jalapeño and that was delicious and a good warm meal after the snow. The eatery is gorgeous, well done and clean and has amble heaters and good restroom facilities. The camp ablutions are rustic, Im glad we only needed the toilet in the camp area once on our day trip.Overall a definite yes!

This place is great for peeps with 4x4s as the mountain drive is really dangerous but exciting. The snow fell and the temperatures were cold for sure. Fantastic trail and well kept. We hiked the perdekop trail and everywhere were manageable. The reserve is clean even though it takes in a huge volume of people. I would definitely reccomend this reserve if you like hiking. There is something for everyone. From 1km to 14km and it is cheap to buy permits, you can also buy the permits online. Children under 16 enter for free and adults pay R50. You can also buy a yearly permit for R300.10/10 whould reccomend.

Drove all the way from cape town to eventually get to a very queue. Decided to walk to the front of the line to check why many cars are turning back only to find a (staff member i presume) telling people how much it cost and itll take an hour to walk up and another hour back. Instead of having a notice put in sight to state these reasons to avoid precious tome wasted. Or place it on the website. Very disappointed we had to turn around as time would not have allowed us to get home before dark as there was no accommodation either

I filmed a video here and the reception a along with the reserves facilities was excellent. Its a unique experience in South Africa in the Western-Capes and one of the few places you can experience the cold and snow 🌨 during winter season! Pack camping gear, sleeping bags and bring a 4x4. The reserve is also open to partnership opportunities to host events and festivals on. We stayed in the ski Hut. You can order wood at reception and stoke the fire all night long for a cozy Hut environment. The ski Hut had no electricity, kitchen has stove, fridge and Geyser, all operated via gas. It was excellent!

Its a lovely place to go as a family, you need a high clearance vehicle for the dirt road and you would think its free entry but no its R70 a adult and R30 a child. (July 2021)Their is 4x4 route. I would love to give 5 stars but i think they need to improve their service by giving people direction and more information. Especially for first time visitors. They should add more toilets second of all and lastly create a pathway that people can walk that doesnt interfere with the drivers thats trying to concentrate on the dirt road.Be prepared when you go and if you take your small children bring extra clothes my boy fell in the river lol and i got a flat tyre upon arrival luckily they had there own pump and we where able to continue. I will definitely be coming back next year more prepared 👍❄️😁😁😁

What a gorgeous drive from CPT, whether via the Huguenot Tunnel or via Tulbach. Be aware that the final stretch is dirt road that will get muddy in bad weather. Go early after snowfall if you still want to see powder. After a few days the lower regions with snow melt and dry up. After that it will be an 1+ hour hike to the lowest snow and 1+ hour back. Highly recommended drive even if you dont want to see snow. Green fields, gorgeous vistas and majestic mountains.
