So if you are looking for that perfect, uniquely African gift for anyone and you havent been down to the uShaka World Village Walk retail area - you should do yourself a favour and head down there. You will find a relaxed retail atmosphere with an assortment of shops - with flip flops fitting right in on this walk!I discovered a true little gem of Durban along the route - The African Art Centre. It is a fitting example of a truly spectacular collection of Local Artists work - on display for sale. The old nik-naks found on the Durban beachfronts - aimed at the tourists which frequent Durban in the School Holidays, have no place in this art & craft gallery.Instead, there are intricately carved and brandished wooden African animal characters such as Peacocks, Owls & Rhinos - each with theirown unique touches - with no two pieces being alike. You will also find brightly coloured intricate beadwork, fantastically complex basket weaving and exquisite jewellery in the form of beaded necklaces and bangles - displaying a rich tapestry of vibrant colours and geometric patterns. Not only are you supporting an indigenous cultural experience which gives struggling artists a backbone for survival, but you will be warmedby the distinctively African feel of your affordable purchase. There is a larger selection of arts & crafts available at the headquarters - the Phansi Museum, situated at 500 Esther Roberts Road in Glenwood.A definite two thumbs up for adding to quality Durban Tourism!! Local is Lekker.
This is the most amazing venture. Providing an outlet for South Africas amazing talent is a wonderful idea which has been beautifully done. I spent a pleasurable few hours at the center shop which is full of interesting art and craft products.
Beautiful works of art from local artists, sculptures and designers. Prices are fair, not expensive. Clean, neat, well curated.
The selection of superbly made crafts is unique in its quality and location. You will not find another shop like this.
Beautiful art and friendly staff
Really wonderful contemporary art gallery and place to shop for handicrafts in Durban. Friendly staff was willing to talk to me about their beadwork. Id go here again if I needed to purchase a gift for a friend.
