Loved this park. Just wow. Amazing views, great game viewing, amazing vistas and comfortable, clean accomodation. We spent 2 days here and wished Id booked a week. Roads are pretty rough so best suited to a 4x4 but some roads are doable in a car. I would really recommend a visit to this stunning and well run park.
Enroute from Johannesburg - we stayed one night. We were here many years ago and very impressed with the improvements. We stayed in a self catering 2 ensuite bedroomed unit, one with shower and the other with bath and hand held shower. The unit is slightly dated but clean and the view is amazing. Our unit was wheelchair friendly as well as catered for disabled visitors. The beds were overly firm for me but good pillows and bedding. We saw lots of buck and other wild life. We didnt have enough time for a hike. The short fossil walk was very interesting. There is a private restaurant and curio shop onsite. Swimming pool to cool you off of a hot day.
Must visit national park when in the Western Cape. Last visited when I was a child and while not a lot has changed, a lot has changed. Which is a good thing. Few short hiking trails inside the gated community which can even be done with a 3 month old (in a carry of course). You also have a few trails to drive (where some of them are tarred), but quite a few require a more off road vechicle, especially to reach the area where the lions most likely reside. With the challets breakfast is included, and I wasnt dissapointed with the food/coffee served.
We often travel past the Karoo National Park but did not think it is worth it just to stay for a night. What a mistake. Delightful cottages with everything you may need are set with fantastic views of the Karoo mountains. Absolute silence with the most fantastic galaxy to view. This time we stayed two days and took the opportunity to explore the full 4x4 route. What a fantastic day. We viewed a wide variety of wildlife, and were amazed by the beauty of the landscape. From now on we will not be able to pass the Karoo National Park without a stop.
Such a special place, sadly too often we pass it by without second thought. The absolute quiet is disarming at first.... but once you have experienced it- you will want to return.SA National Parks have a real gem here, but once again- lack of maintenance lets them down.Even so, you have to go here at least once
What was meant to be just an overnight stop turned into a wonderful unexpected adventure. In our short 12hr stay we managed to see almost all the game, tortoises, ostrich, zebra and even (and perhaps the most exciting) a rock monitor lizard! The park is beautifully maintained. The views spectacular and the bathrooms spotless. We will definitely be back, next time for a longer stay
Love the karoo! Eternity on your doorstep. Breakfast included in the price. Restaurant available. Barbeque facilities . Freezing cold though would have been nice if the shop stored a fewmore convenience foods.
What a georgeous place. Different experience from other parks. The heat and the silence! Spotting the animals was quite the experience given that they camouflaged so well but this made the experience better. Pleasantly suprised with the working pool by the picnic area, much needed cooling in the heat.
Cleanliness amazing, very comfortable campsites and stunning seenary from main gate entrance.
Was a great experience and a lovely park. We saw lions and almost all the animals there is to see. Very friendly staff from the gare to the reception. Only thing missing was a 2 point plug for charging devices in the accommodation. Other than that, great!
A beautiful scenic park. The roads are bad. Lovely cottages. A very peaceful and restful place.
Excellent facilities and wonderfully maintained. A serene, quiet gem so close to the real world bustle of Beaufort West
The Karoo National Park is situated just outside Beaufort West, and very different from the bushveld parks in Flora and Fauna in that it is semi-desert. The roads both tar and gravel are in good condition and the Klipspringer Pass within the reserve is absolutely stunning. Animals I have seen are gemsbok, springbok, cape mountain zebra, eland, kudu, red hartebeest, huge variety of birdlife and it also home to 5 species of tortoises. The staff are friendly and efficient and very helpful and restrooms clean.
We had some good sightings of Bat eared Fox and Shrews. The sand roads require a rugged vehicle. In a word they are terrible… but there is a fair amount of Tar.
Incredible place, where nature stays nature. The park is so well looked after , and the staff were friendly and well informed. The campsite was neat and clean and well set out. The park itself is so very untouched that for a while you forget about the hustle and bustle of life. Wonderful efforts to preserve this beautiful region .
Very dry and arid environment but the accommodation and scenery makes up for it making this one of the most well managed parks. Cozy living space thats diligently maintained. So many wild animals including lions. This park hosts so many little treasure if youre willing to see beyond the obvious attractions. Its a great place to do star gazing, birding and insect identifications, wildlife viewing and their night drives are amazing. One of the best places to get to see the illusive Aardwolf.Theres a restaurant and little craft shop inside as well. There are also two swimming pools. Rest camp swimming pool and the bulkraal braai area swimming pool.
We camped at this park with friends for a long week-end and we were really impressed with what a clean, organized and well-run campsite it was. Sparkling bathrooms, a very well appointed communal kitchen area and lovely shaded camp sites. Well-stocked shop and we really enjoyed the game drives. Plus the bonus of a short drive to a big communal swimming swimming pool to cool off in, surrounded by a lovely grassed area perfect for picnics.
From the friendly staff at the entrance gate, the few hours were very pleasant. Wild card members have free access. Very neat reception building with restaurant and well stocked shop. Info on a board where animals are sited is very helpful. Walks, hikes and MTB trails. Chalets and very neat camping/ caravan site. The silence on the drives is deafening. Nature at her best and 5 hours from Cape Town.
Nice camping grounds. Clean bathrooms. Friendly personal. They will see me again soon,
Phenomenal place to just get away from civilization and rediscover life in what seems like nothingness
Not the place to view alot of wildlife, but I have stayed there on many occasions, great to recharge the soul. Usually we camp. This recent stop was just a overnight rest on route and we stayed in the chalets. Other than arriving in pitch black darkness to a chalet, it would have been nice to leave a light on so we could find our way a bit easier, and a blocked kitchen drain, it is still a special place for me
Beautiful landscape. Friendly reception. Very good the accomodation chalets and camping place.
Always a winner to return to.Very friendly helpful staff.Very neat and well maintained facilities.Lovely campsite many with paved sites. Clean ablution facilities and fully equipped kitchen.Various routes you can take for game drives.
We are tent campers, always searching for a bit of privacy so last campsite at the exit was best for us.Otherwise its mostly a lager of caravans and trailers without view.Kitchen and bathrooms excellent.Boiling water on tap and everything spotless. The Klipspringer pass is spectacular but go to the Doornhoek picnic spot and turn around. Rather boring if you carry on with the Potlekkertjie loop.
Thus is a very beautiful place. The park is very scenic with extensive drives through a whole variety of habitat types. The mountains are spectacular. You come here primarily to experience Karoo mountains and plains - both in the same park. This ecosystem is so different and so interesting. The wildlife is very good too. You dont come here to see lions and elephants at every turn. There are plenty of other South African parks where you can do that. There are lions - we heard them roaring around the camp at night but we never saw them in the day.In four days we saw Mountain Zebra ( beautiful and rare animals) , Eland, Gemsbok, Hartebeest, Kudu (big, and dark brown), Klipspringer, Mountain reedbuck, Springbok, water mongoose and fresh spoor and middens of Black Rhino. The bird life is excellent - we spotted 59 species in the four days, including Karoo Korhaan, Fairy Fly catcher, Double banded Courser, Booted Eagles, Karoo Chat, Karoo Lark, Long billed Lark, Spike heeled Lark, African Shell duck, Ground Woodpecker. The park is also very well managed. The facilities are always clean. The little shop is adequate but Beaufort West is close by and you can purchase anything you choose there. One wonders about the lion population though - after years of drought, is there enough food to sustain them? Doesnt look like it.
Certainly a must visit. Also a great stop enroute between Johannesburg and Cape Town. The accommodation is far from the N1, so super quiet and peaceful. The reserve as typical Karoo scenery and a great variety of Wildlife. The fossil walk is a bonus and extremely interesting and informative. I had a hiccup with reservations but this was not there fault but a head office issue. Thanks again for a lovely stay.
Ablutions, camp sites and general facilities are first class. Should have 6-star rating
Stunning vistas, authentic wildlife and the epitome of the Karoo. Accommodation is basic but perfectly fine. A great place to visit for a different wild experience. Take a 4x4 though as the roads around the park are not suited to a normal car...
Awesomeness 👌. Immaculate and tranquil. The best !!! Well maintained and super clean. What an experience 👏🙌👌
Very neat saw quite a bit of wild even though it is extremely hot. Would definitely recommend staying over the night beautiful view.
Beautiful scenery and good accommodation
Stunning place to unwind and relax. I would certainly recommend the numerous trails surrounding the rest camp. Good sightings of antelope and Karoo birds but only keen eyes can spot the resident lions, making it even more special.
Excellent reception and staff very friendly, chalet spotless with sanitizer, breakfast and service was a great treat. Highly recommend
The beauty of the park is its stunning stark landscapes.
The Karoo National Park exceeded all my expectations, from the rest camp and accommodation to the wildlife sightings, picnic areas and overall natural beauty of the park. We stayed in one of the Family Cottages which was well equipped and can comfortably sleep 6 people. If camping is more your style, we went for a walk around the camping area and all the sites as well as the ablution facilities are very well maintained. The rest camp has a number of activities to keep you busy while you arent out on a game drive including hiking trails, the fossil trail (walking trail lined with fossils and historical information about the area), a bird hide, Interpretive Centre, swimming pool, shop and restaurant. Although a large portion of the park is only accessible by 4x4, the routes that are available for normal vehicles are in a good condition (though the Potlekkertjie route is very corrugated so we only drove it once) and you wont have a lack of animals sightings at all. We saw big groups of Eland, Kudu and Oryx close to the road, just to name a few. I was also very impressed by the picnic areas. The Doornhoek site is shaded by big trees, and the Bulkraal one is just as beautiful and even has a pool. Both sites also have braai (barbecue) facilities. You get the most beautiful sunrises (which we enjoyed every morning with a cup of coffee and some rusks) and sunsets in the park. In the past the park was just a stop over on the way from Cape Town to Johannesburg, but this is no longer the case. It has truly grown into something special. We had such a great time, made so many memories and I cant wait to go again. Just to note, its not a Big 5 reserve.
Beautifull. Calming place. Gorgeous view! Picnic place in the wild with a swimming pool included. Game and 4x4 drives. Walking trails.
Was absolutely fabulous. Clean & true to SA Parks Board style. The peace ,beauty & tranquility of the Park was amazing & good for the soul.
First time in the Karoo National Park and booked a chalet. Unexpectedly surprised at the spaciousness, a 6 sleeper! Bathrooms could use an update, as the shower head is chest height and Im not very tall!Breakfast included in our package and the menu offers a decent selection.Definitely worth a return visit, despite being charged by a black rhino! 😱
Wow its the best SAN park caravan park we have been to. So well maintained. Fantastic scenic routes.
Friendly people and lovely scenery. Definitely a place to spend more than a day.
Love the arid, stark beauty of the Karoo!
Beautifully maintained and well managed wildlife reserve. Well worth a visit.
The absolute quietness, the beauty and early morning smell of nature makes you feel alive, again. The noises of the veldt and utmost tension of concentration to sometimes hear something at all plays with your mind. The freedom to move around in your private vehicle is an absolute bonus. I will be back.
Not to hot. Waited 2 hours fir breakfast. Booked for three but 1 bed not made. Light in braai completely broken.
Arguably the best run SANPARK I have visited
Great place to spend a night or two, friendly staff, well equipped chalets
Best place to stay, spotless, well equipped chalets. Friendly staff good breakfast. Highly recommended place to visit
The Karoo is a total disconnect from the average for its just different.Amazing single lane tarred mountain pass, build with rock and a must see. It real quiet and peaceful in next dimension. Good 4x4 trails. To see natural ground, soil erosion also diffrent from the normal. Dry heat a interesting experience.
Lovely cottages to stay in. Very clean and tidy. Beautiful views. Friendly staff and delicious breakfast. Will go back soon!
Love this place. Great camping sites, and good clean ablution facilities.
A wonderful National Park close to Beaufort West.Friendly staff with a bonus of daily breakfast included in the price.Arid Karoo conditions with endemic birds to search for .Well marked trails within the main camp with interesting historical information.Electricity and air conditioning welcome during the hot days.Great swimming pool which is beautifully maintained.Braai on patio user friendly. Park has lions and many kinds of buck .Well worth a visit,it was our second and we will be back
Its wonderful to see the Ksrroo without sheep. Although the herbivores on display along the fossil walk resemble prehistoric sheep.
Beautiful park to enjoy the great landscape of the karoo. There is also a lot of wildlife and for the 4x4 enthusiasts there are some nice tracks to explore.
The dirt roads have been poorly maintained and are hardly suitable for any sedan or hatchback. Only high clearance vehicles manage properly.Beyond that the park is stunningly beautiful and the chalets are well kept.
Facilities at the rest camp was amazing, clean and neat. Camp site was taken care of. Shop had everything we needed. Roads arent marked clearly like other NPs
A great place and kept tip top by the staff.
Its a nice game reserve with generous people and beautiful nature with wild animals and beautiful accommodation too.
Awsome place but ohhh the noisy neighbors that dont stick to the rules. Maby a afterhour number to phone please.
A real gem in the great Karoo. Amazing facilities. Great breakfast to boot!
Wow absolute beauty, even for all its desert dryness. Many animals seen in late afternoon. Including a Cape Coral Snake and many buck, ostrich, birds. But most of all the widescreen horizon to horizon of stars, takes your breath away.
Peace and quiet for the body and soul
Great experience. Saw lot of animals. Beautiful scenery. Worth a drive
This is a unique environment. The facilities cater for every need and is kept immaculately.
Clean and well maintained.
Great park for 4x4 enthusiasts. Sedan drivers may feel limited as most routes are 4x4 only.Recent rains have rejuvenated the landscape.Visit the interpretive center and have a look at the taxidermy male Lion.Camping facilities are neat, clean and private.
Roads are very bad. Directions are bad. Maps are bad.
A beautiful setting and great to drive your vehicle in the park. You may spot lion and gems ok
A stark contrast to what you may picture for South Africa. Amazing amount of wildlife for lions to klipspringers. Enjoy a meal outdoors at the restaurant in order to see the many species using the waterhole.
Clean comfortable unit..verandah with braai and magnificent views..helpful staff..tasty breakfast..superb starry night skies...
Perfect clean camping, hot water, campkitchen on top. Special landscape, best atmosphere.
Love this park. So well laid out and informative. The fossil trail is a lesson in itself. So much on the geological history of the area which puts it into context. The amazing Klipspringer pass. What a feat of engineering, to say nothing of the views from the top. Did a night drive. Excellent guide and saw lions which was a treat. Not too impressed with the kitchen so although breakfast is included we had only one and did our own for the following two days. No hardship with a view like that!
Very well maintained park and great hospitality from very friendly staff
Very peaceful! Want to escape reality? Visit this place!
Stunning national park, very well managed! Friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming staff! What a treat to stay here! The wildlife seems relaxed and all in good health! Thank you SANParks!
Silvester MTB and Trail run at the park was excellent. Zebra, ostrich, kudu, gemsbok, and lots more to see. Returning as soon as possible!
Friendly staff and very nice cottages. Short self drive game drive lots of animals.
Excellent facilities, excellent amenities, beautiful Karoo setting, a perfect Karoo experience.
Stayed over for 2 nights. Toilets was spotless. Park was very clean. Staff very helpful.
One of my most favorite places to come
